Angeles Politico – A 25-year Breast Cancer Survivor

by Reynaldo O Joson on Saturday, June 18, 2011 at 11:51pm

Breast cancer survivor for 25 years as of 2011, Angeles Politico, from San Pedro, Laguna, is now 76 years old. I did a modified radical mastectomy (total mastectomy and axillary dissection) on her left breast in 1986 (she was 51 years old t…hen) in Manila Doctors Hospital . Histopath showed infiltrating ductal carcinoma. The axillary lymph nodes that were removed during the operation were negative for spread of cancer. After the operation, she received 6 cycles of chemotherapy consisting of intravenous cyclophosphamide and 5-fluorouracil. NO hormonal assay. NO hormonal treatment. She came to consult me today, June 18, 2011, for a 1-cm right breast mass. I did a needle evaluation with aspiration and got 1 cc of brownish fluid followed by complete disappearance of the mass. My diagnosis for her right breast mass is MACROCYST. Thus, she continues to be in remission, no breast cancer recurrence, enjoying her life as a breast cancer survivor. She and her relatives, specifically, her sister and niece, Inia Sta. Maria, who took the picture in my clinic, agreed to have her story told in the NET to serve as an inspiration of hope to all Filipino breast cancer patients. She looks forward to attending again the MDH Cancer Crusaders Club Get-together and Christmas Party come first Sunday of December this year. I am very very happy for Angie Politico. Thank you, LORD!

Breast Cancer Survivor Rosario Largoza – 21 Years in Remission

by Reynaldo O Joson on Sunday, July 10, 2011 at 2:26pm

Breast Cancer Survivor Rosario (aka Ruby) Largoza is currently (2011) 21 years in remission. She is now 65 years old.  I did a total mastectomy and axillary dissection on one of her breasts in 1990 when she was 43 years old.  Histopath showed “intraductal carcinoma with Paget’s Disease” with armpit nodes negative for spread.  She did not receive any additional treatment after the operation.  We both thank God for the remission.

Breast Cancer Survivor Nenita Mercene – 22 Years in Remission

by Reynaldo O Joson on Monday, December 5, 2011 at 10:28pm

Ms. Nenita Mercene, from San Jose, Occidental Mindoro, was 43 years old in 1989 when I did a modified radical mastectomy for her stage-2 breast cancer in Manila Doctors Hospital.  I saw her on December 4, 2011, at the 24th Annual Christmas Get-together of the Manila Doctors Hospital Cancer Crusaders Club.  She is now 65 years old and with no evidence of recurrence.  She is now 22 years in remission. We both thank God for this long remission.

Ms. Mercene died sometime in 2022 not from COVID19, not from a breast cancer recurrence, but other cause (she was diagnosed to have liver cirrhosis in 2017).  In 2022, aged 76, she was 33 years in remission from her breast cancer.

Breast Cancer Survivor Gloria Solmirano – 28 Years in Remission

by Reynaldo O Joson on Monday, December 5, 2011 at 10:01pm

Ms. Gloria Solmirano, from Aklan, was 33 years old in 1983 when she discovered a 4-cm mass on her right breast.  I operated on her at the Philippine General Hospital. I did a modified radical mastectomy. The histopath diagnosis was comedocarcinoma with axillary nodes negative for metastasis.  She underwent postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy consisting of cyclophosphamide, methotrexate, and 5-fluorouracil.  I saw her on December 3, 2011 and there was no clinical evidence of recurrence.  She is now 61 years old, still in remission 28 years after her operation.  We both thank God for the long remission.

In 2021, Ms. Solmirano died of complications of COVID19.  She did not have any evidence of breast cancer recurrence.  In 2021, she was 38 years in remission.

In 2015 - 32 years in remission

In 2018 - 35 years in remission

Breast Cancer Survivor Beulah Arciga – 23 Years

by Reynaldo O Joson on Thursday, September 22, 2011 at 6:50pm

Beulah Ariga, now 72 years old, was 50 years old in 1998 when I did a modified radical mastectomy (total mastectomy and axillary dissection) on her in Manila Doctors Hospital . HIstopathology showed intraductal carcinoma (5 cm) with negative nodes.  She received 8 cycles of chemotherapy after the operation (Cyclophosphamide and 5-Fluorouracil).  She has been in remission for 23 years until last month, when she had another breast cancer on her other breast.  A mastectomy was done.  Histopathology showed invasive ductal carcinoma with mucinous component.  We both thank God for the 23 years of remission and we hoped she will do well again after the second operation.

Breast Cancer Survivor Grace Jamon – 22 Years

by Reynaldo O Joson on Thursday, September 15, 2011 at 9:34pm

Ms. Grace Jamon came to see me today, September 15, 2011, for a check-up.  In 1989, when she was 33 years old, a few months after she gave birth, she noticed a 5-cm mass on her left breast.  She consulted me after which I did a needle biopsy followed by a modified radical mastectomy (total mastectomy and axillary dissection).  Histopath result showed infiltrating ductal carcinoma with 2 positive lymph nodes in the axilla.  She received 6 cycles of chemotherapy (cyclophosphamide, methotrexate, and 5-fluorouracil).  She is now 55 years old, 22 years in remission.  We both thank God for this remission.  Grace was a professor in the Department of Political Science in the University of the Philippines Diliman when she got operated in 1989.  Up to now, she is still connected with the department.  After her operation in 1989, she made it her mission to do counseling for breast cancer patients who needed help.  She had counseled the wife of a former secretary of health who was afflicted with breast cancer and other breast cancer patients. She can be reached through her Facebook or through the MDH Cancer Crusaders Club, of which she was one of the original members.

Breast Cancer Survivor Myrna Dequiña - 23 Years in Remission

by Reynaldo O Joson on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at 9:27pm ·

Ms. Myrna Dequiña was 42 years old when she underwent a modified radical mastectomy in 1989.  The histopathology result showed invasive ductal carcinoma with one axillary node positive for metastasis.  She underwent 6 cycles of chemotherapy (cyclophospamide, methotrexate, and 5-fluorouracil)[CMF]. There were no other additional treatments and no screening tests for recurrence thereafter.  The surveillance was sign- and symptom-directed. She has been under my medical supervision since 1989.

I saw her today for check-up.  She is now 65 years old, 23 years in remission.  We both thank God for this long remission.

Breast Cancer Survivor ROC – 25 Years in Remission

Ms. Rosemarie O. Cordero was 35 years old in 1987 when I did a modified radical mastectomy on her cancer in one breast.  The histopathologic result showed invasive ductal carcinoma.  She underwent postoperative chemotherapy.  At age 58, 23 years after the first breast operation, she developed another cancer on her other breast, for which I did a modified radical mastectomy in 2010.  She is taking tamoxifen up to now.  Ms. Cordero, as of June 23, 2012, is 60 years old, 25 years in remission from the first breast operation and 2 years, from the second operation.  We both thank God for this long remission.

Breast Cancer Survivor Conchita Suria – 25 Years in Remission

Ms. Conchita Suria, from Quezon, had a breast cancer  for which I did a modified radical mastectomy in 1987. Postoperatively, she received chemotherapy. A year after her chemotherapy, she got her first pregnancy (she was about 30 years old then) and then later another one. She is now 25 years in remission. We both thank God for this long remission.

I saw Ms. Suria on December 2, 2012 during the 25th Anniversary of the MDH Cancer Crusaders Club.

She brought along a laminated and framed certificate of membership of the Cancer Crusaders Club which I issued in 1988.   The certificate dated December 4, 1988 (the first time the Cancer Crusaders Club held its 1st Annual Christmas Get-Together).  I remember that I just affixed my signature in 1988 without printing her name on the certificate.   Ms. Suria treasured the certificate so much that she had her name placed on it, laminated it, and brought it to Manila to show to me when she was given an award for being a 25-year cancer survivor.

Breast Cancer Survivor Maria Ruaro – 25 Years in Remission

Posted on December 11, 2012

Ms. Maria Ruaro, the mother-in-law of my very good friend, Dr. Bootsie Ruaro, was operated by yours truly in 1986 when she was 66 years old.  I did a modified radical mastectomy.  There was no additional treatment after the operation.  Ms. Maria Ruaro was 91 years old when she died of a cause other than her breast cancer in December 2011 (most likely heart-related).  There was no evidence of breast cancer recurrence 25 years after her operation.  The family and I thank God for the non-recurrence of her breast cancer which can be considered as a cure.

2014

Posted on May 20, 2014by reyojoson

Morning of May 20, 2014, while I was doing some writings in my clinic in Manila Doctors Hospital, Ms. Glyceria Milanes dropped by to say hello to me.  She was in MDH consulting another physician for another health problem.  She brought with her a 1992 picture (see below).  She was afraid I might not remember her.

I operated on Ms. Glyceria Milanes in 1992 in the Philippine General Hospital for her breast cancer.  She was 57 years old then.  She had a preoperative radiotherapy before I did a modified radical mastectomy.  She attended the Annual Get-Together of the MDH Cancer Crusaders Club in 1992.  That probably was the last time I saw her.

Today, at age 79, she has no clinical evidence of recurrence of her breast cancer.  She is now 22 years in remission for her breast cancer.  We both thank God for this long remission.  I was also touched by her purposeful visit to tell me that she is still alive and to thank me for what I did.  What a happy moment for me.
