Short Bio

I am a Professor of Global Health Economics at the Centre for Health Economics of the University of York, where I co-lead the Global Health Team.

I was born in Santiago, Chile, but moved to Brazil when I was six years old. I was raised in the city of Sao Paulo, where I obtained a BSc (Hons) in Economics and an MSc in Economics of Institutions and Development, both from the University of Sao Paulo (USP). I then moved to the United Kingdom in 2005 and received a PhD in Economics from the University of York.

Before moving to the University of York I was a Lecturer at the Department of Economics, University of Sheffield (2014-16). Until August 2014 I worked as an MRC Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Imperial College London Business School. My previous professional appointments also include spells at the World Bank (Development Economics Research Group), University of Sao Paulo (Department of Economics) and Federal University of Sao Paulo (Paulista Center for Health Economics), as well as consultancy work for institutions such as WHO, OECD, Inter-American Development Bank, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, the Rockefeller Foundation and Save the Children.
