1. When Eli says that NAS is 'basically' a shared file server, what does he mean? How does a NAS differ from a conventional file server?
Network Attached Storage operating systems just store data which is just like a share file server. However it Differs from a conventional file server since you cannot do anything else with it
2. According to Eli, what is the problem with serving files from a conventional Windows File Server?
Conventional Windows File Servers allow for users to browse the Web and install applications, this is not possible on a Network Attached Storage.
3. How does Eli define a SAN?
Storage Area Network devices store data in a cluster
4. In a SAN context, what is a cluster? What are the inherent advantages of a cluster?
A cluster is made up of interconnected SAN devices
Inherent advantages:
Redundancy in case of failure
Replication in case of failure
5. From Eli's perspective, what is the most obnoxious problem with commercial storage?
Fixed hard drive storage amounts will become a problem for commercial storage because there are big and will cause enterprises to migrate data.
6. From Eli's perspective, what is the advantage of storing a VM instance on a SA and running the instance on a hypervisor?
If a Hypervisor were to fail, another one would takeover and a users would be redirected to it to avoid downtime.
7. From Eli's perspective, what is the major advantage and disadvantage of Fiber Channel?
Advantage - Very Fast
Disadvantage - Very Expensive
8. How does Eli describe iSCSI?
Eli describes iSCSI as the "poor mans" version of a fiber channel for connection SANs.
