Tips for Success
1. Get Organized. Start your semester off right by reading your course outlines, understanding expectations and setting deadlines. Keep your binders, desk and computer files neat and orderly.
2. Use a Calendar. Mark everything down in a day timer or calendar so there are no surprise deadlines or missed tests.
3. Be Informed. Read your course outlines carefully and ensure you understand the expectations of the instructor. Look through the instructor’s welcome message, discussion boards and chat areas on a regular basis.
4. Plan Ahead. When working on several courses at one time, there will inevitably be times when many assignments and tests are due seemingly all at once. Look at the timeline for each course and identify when your busy periods will be. Stay ahead of your assignments and, when possible, complete tests early.
5. Prioritize. Identify how many marks assignments and tests are worth and determine the amount of time you need to spend on them. If necessary, split up large assignments into smaller, more manageable sections. Set yourself a timeline to bring them all together.
6. Take Breaks. Do not tie yourself to your desk—get outside for some fresh air or a quick walk. As well, make time in your schedule to enjoy hobbies, time with family and exercise. Those activities will recharge your batteries and help you to focus when you get back to your studies.
7. Find a Study Spot. Utilize the various quiet spaces on campus if you find you are easily distracted.
8. Take Care of Yourself. Eat well, exercise and get enough sleep—all are key in keeping your mind focused.
9. Participate. Read the discussion boards for classes and join in. Ask questions when you do not understand a topic and utilize the additional resources that instructors post.
10. Talk to Your Peers. Many other eLab students are completing similar studies. Ask for support and guidance along the way, especially from those who are a semester or two ahead.
11. Ask for Help. If you are struggling, please do not wait until it is too late. We can help you get back on track with study plans, tutors and specific time management ideas that will work for you.
12. Have a Vision. Keep in mind the goals you are working toward and the new career you hope to achieve.
