FLORENCE

"Above all I believe in the God-given genius of certain individuals, and I value a society that makes their existence possible"

SIR KENNETH CLARK (1903-1983)

From Dante's Divine Comedy to Brunelleschi's Dome, from Ghiberti's Baptistry doors to the Medici Chapel of Michelangelo, from Alberti to Galileo, Donatello and Botticelli the genius of Florence is undisputed and it is omnipresent in this grand and ancient city. It is impossible to enumerate all the works you will see while in Florence, whether visiting the many churches like Santa Maria Novella containing the renowned frescoes by Ghirlandaio or the city's museums, you will experience an unparalleled art-historical high point.

THE UFFIZI GALLERY

This is one of the most famous and important art galleries in the world, which contains works of art from Giotto, Cimabue, Leonardo da Vinci to name but a few. On the left you can see an image of Fra Filippo Lippi's Madonna and child from the Uffizi.

THE PALAZZO PITTI

The Palatine gallery, on the first floor contains a large ensemble of over 500 principally Renaissance paintings, including works by Titian, Correggio and Pietro da Cortona as well as the Raphael portrait shown on the right. The character of the gallery is still that of a private collection, and the works of art are displayed and hung much as they would have been in the grand rooms for which they were intended.

La Galleria dell'Accademia is famous for its Michelangelo collection, including the David and many of the Slave sculptures like the one shown on the left.

THE CASA BUONARROTI

Numerous drawings and sculptures by Michelangelo are also on display at the Casa Buonarroti.

MUSEO DELL' OPERA DEL DUOMO

In 1891, the Museum was founded to house the works of art which, through the course of the centuries, had been removed from the Duomo and the Baptistry. In addition to displaying plans, models and machines used in the construction of the Duomo, the museum displays the Porta del Paradiso, one panel of which is shown on the right, Michelangelo's Duomo PietĂ , works by Luca della Robbia and Pollaiuolo as well as numerous Donatello sculpture.
