10/11/10 - Unknown Attack On Bank!!…Endangered Specie Plucked On De Van Wyck!!
As expected, it was mayhem on the Van Wyck to culminate the 2010 Sonny’s Auto Collision Windball Cricket Tournament on October 3, 2010. It had Tassa!…DJ!…Hornman!…Pelau!…Corn Soup!…Ah Cook on de Pavement!…and No Parking!!...ah real back home Trini style extravaganza!!
Best of the Rest Action – Astoria Savings vs Unknown
“Astoria Savings Bank WB” is denying rumors that their security system failed miserably under a 102 alert. A spokesperson for the defeated bank said that it was Unknown what really hit them.
CONGRATULATIONS UNKNOWN!!!
League Final – Green Eagles vs Level Two
Well boy, ASPCA was called off that Sunday when they heard that it was an ex-president who was involved in the plucking of some Eagles on the Van Wyck.
Eagles won the toss and elected to bat. With the Eagles legacy of miraculous showmanship on the field, 102 seemed to be a winning score. But the mindset of their opponents was a category 2 Leveling of the task at hand. Calling in the War President, Reagan did exactly that, waged war on the Eagles. Bombshell after bombshell, lambasting 29 off the first over amassing a busy and well played 37. By then, one third of the Eagles’ feathers were already plucked just with his contribution. The Eagles fought back with everything they had, including their wicket at one point, but to no avail. They finally came face to face with the true owners/STARS of the land they staked claim to a year ago.
CONGRATULATIONS LEVEL ALL STARS!!!
The awards ceremony followed Level’s 104 for 8 victory with Animal of the Green Eagles earning the Man-of-the-Match for his 47 runs batting contribution and a very tidy 4 overs 2 wickets for 14 runs. The Level boys remained in the spotlight with Marlo (Level One) capturing the MVP for his 307 runs batting aggregate and 28-wicket haul for the season. Other teams sharing the spotlight were Just 4 Kicks for best uniform and Avengers for the most discipline team. Congratulations all and well done!!
With this we say good bye to the 2010 season and thank each and everyone who participated and supported us including the neighbors for indulging us throughout. Special thanks go out to the sponsors of the league, Sonny’s Auto Collision and the man whose dedication and love for the sport made it possible for us to come out each Sunday to enjoy the game, hats off to Vishnu Ramlochan and his invaluable support Leena.
9/27/10 - The Eagle Has landed!!...Trouble in Paradise!!...Beep Beep My ...!!...Bank Job Ah-Bust!!...
So much for modern-day exploration! The ruling Eagles said no no no to the Explorers sending them packing to their native land. The Eagles have now landed to defend their title in the final.
Enough is enough! Level committed blasphemy when they said to hell with Paradise to earn a chance to ruffle some feathers in the finals next weekend.
It seems like someone got tired of the beep beep of the Road Runners this weekend and took them out! We have abandoned our investigation into who put the hit on the beep beep pest and closed our case as Unknown!!
As for Jesse James and his Boys from de Junction, Astoria Savings Bank sent a clear message that this was not the Wild Wild West. It takes more than a few sticks of dynamite and some gun play to rob a bank in this era! A spokesman from the Bank’s team said that they have come a long way in their security and is ready for the Unknown.
The two finals will be played back to back this weekend October 3, 2010 at the Van Wyck. The best of the rest will be Unknown/Astoria Savings WB 9:00am and the big game for the league playoff will be Green Eagles/Level Two 11:00am following the Unknown/Astoria game.
Will the Bank’s security measure up to the Unknown attack!!...and will the Eagles sore above or below the Level!! Come find out!!
GOOD LUCK TO ALL!!!
9/22/10 - Sreeeech!!...Badang!!...Oh God We Crash!!...We Journey Done!!
Green Eagles vs United HD / Road Runners vs Unknown
Yes people, we waxing warm to a grand finish for the league playoff. Christopher Columbus discovered the land of the Bald Eagle on October 12, 1492 and on September 19, 2010 the Explorers re-enacted this journey discovering the Green Eagles by getting rid of high definition (HD) to set the tone for the 14the century era. The question that now remains is whether they have the artillery to conquer the ruling Eagles.
The other battle in this league playoff round will be a fight for Paradise. Will it be as simple to Level Paradise or will it be Simply hell for Level.
Beep beep…that’s the sound coming from the best of the rest and Road Runners entering the Unknown. Will they be lost in the Unknown or will they find their way to the Junction or the Bank.
Speaking about Banks, ah hear they beef up security at ah "Bank" in Queens because it have some Boys on the Junction looking to “rob” ah “Bank” this weekend. It will be a “cops” and “robbers” show down up at 235th this weekend so take cover!
GOOD LUCK TO ALL !!!
9/1/10 - "De Journey Now Start !!
Barman...gimme ah Level lic..kin...and he did!!
United HD pulled it off and as their name may suggest, in high definition style to take first place in group 1. Congratulations United, keep on flying!
As was expected, Level 2 captured the number one spot in Group 2 and for those remaining afloat, NJ/NY United, Playboys and Crusaders proved to have had the most sea worthy legs making it into the big eight.
The playoff action will begin September 12 along with the "Best of the Rest" knockout. See you then and have a safe and enjoyable Labor Day!!
8/27/10 - One Game Away From Playoffs, Good News For Teams Not Qualifying
The big question is, will it be a Level finish. This weekend will be action packed and if you have never seen a miracle, I suggest you come out as there could be one on Sunday. Can Calypso Boys pull it off against Level 2 and deny them the #1 position? As for United and Level 1, bring out de troops!... it go be war on de Van Wyck!! Remember Gypsy's 'Captain de Ship is Sinking", well that is the team song for Crusaders, Road Runners, NJ/NY United, Playboys and Astoria Savings. Sorry Avengers, you are now buried treasure. It will take a treasure hunt to bring you to the surface. Which three will keep afloat!
Hold on, there is more for the ten teams who didn't qualify. In the absence of the mixed knockout which we all enjoyed last year, the league has decided to run a knockout trophy competition for these ten teams so that we all enjoy the same number of games. This will run simultaneously with the playoffs and will of course finish before the finals. So don't pack up your gear just yet!!
Good luck to all this week end!!
8/15/10 - Two games away from Playoffs and Unknown made it known!
To quote Shadow…“Feel De Tension!! who would have known he was talking about our cricket league.
The playoff round is now just two games away (one for some), and things are waxing warm as the race to the playoffs has begun. You would think the venue was the Aqueduct race track with all the jostling for position as we hit the home stretch.
Coming up from last in the pack was Unknown who made it known that they were not being left behind. Unknown blasted 171 for 9 and pummeled Extraz for a humiliating 37 for 10 leaving Pause last in the pack…Giddy-up!!
With that Extraz effort, Avengers are thanking their lucky stars as they are holding their ground with the leaders to give them a qualifying chance for the playoffs. In this group, it seems like it could be a photo finish between United HD and Level One for first place unless Pause 4 Ah Coors or Just 4 Kicks ‘pulls an Unknown’. Barring any further “Unknowns”, the battle for 7th and 8th positions could end up being between the “Playboys”, “Avengers” and NJ/NY United with Astoria having marginal room on the inside to squeeze in.
In Group 2, we could say a Level,/Simply/Venom finish but dare not! Let us not forget race 6 when Junction Boys disturbed the equilibrium of the Level. So barring Outsiders, West Indies United, Numbers or Calypso Boys not “pulling ah Junction Boys” and, Junction Boys not reproducing a carbon copy against Venom, Level Two has a good chance of taking first place in this group. Could it be a Level victory for both groups? Your guess is as good as mine. Turning to the bottom end, 6th, 7th and 8th positions could all be a vicious run between Numbers, Road Runners, Calypso Boys and Crusaders with Outsiders seeing a very small opening on the outside (no pun intended) to finish.
So once again we are gearing up for an exciting race to the playoffs.
Giddy-up!!...and good luck to all!!
7/18/10 - Round 7 Awaited Clash
You know windball cricket has come a long way when you come to the park, middle of cricket season, can’t find a parking spot, and when you do, have to take a taxi back to the ground or as we say in Trini, “bum ah drop” back…you have parked that far.
The talk of this weekend’s cricket was all about the Venom/Level clash. You had to see it to believe it. It was like the final of the tournament. Finally, the questions being pondered all week, what Level the Venom will hit its prey or will the Venom be neutralized by a Level of cricket unknown to its predator, were put to rest.
If you haven’t heard by now, Group 2 is safe of any type of Venom, at least until the next week. The Level of antidote was just enough to recover from the Venomous bite not without slight damage. Unfortunately, one of the Level players was injured attempting to take what would have been a miraculous catch on the overhead boundary. Thankfully, the player was able to walk away after some very tense minutes.
Congratulations to the Level ALLLL Stars!!!
We also salute the captain of Level for the sportsman that he is. After the pounding their team received in our article, this is what he had to say,
“The write-up could not have been any better. It was accurate and to the point.” He went on to say, “…we need to support and encourage the younger teams and the article did just that.” Hat’s off to you El Capitan!!
With attitudes such as displayed above, one would think windball cricket is certainly on its way to greater heights in these parts. But there is a very dark and dismal evil lurking around to take all this away from us....ALCOHOL.
A few years back, we lost the Atkins ground due to pure reckless behavior and total disregard to public property, the league rules, not to mention normal everyday decency. This week end, we lost yet another ground, Sutphin, a ground which was once locked and reopened under the premise that teams will ensure proper behavior and that their players/supporters will respect the property.
We all know the great losses associated with alcohol, lives, jobs, families, friends, respect, dignity, league venues, and the list goes on and on. As for alcohol related problems, private and public disruptions, embarrassment, brawls, mistaking a wall for a rest room and the list goes on. Please let us not add our cricket league to this list. The consumption of alcohol at our league venues is against the rules, not to mention against the law. There is a public restroom in very close proximity to each venue. Using anywhere else as a bathroom at any league venue is also against the league’s rules and the law.
So I am appealing to everyone to please let us make an extra effort to preserve what we have built so far for our cricket in these parts. Let us all be ambassadors of the game and hopefully we will some day have our own windball parks, if not stadiums. But first, we must prove ourselves worthy of it.
7/11/10 - GROUP 2 UPSET!!!
It was pandamonium last Sunday at the M.C.G. ground where the underdogs, Junction Boyz, came out victorious, yes I said VICTORIOUS, over Level All Stars 2, one of the big-guns/favorites of the 2010 season.
In the absence of 3 of their "Stars" Level still managed to subdue the high energy Boyz to a mere 95 runs. The writing was certainly on the wall for the Boyz. Believe it or not, miracles still do happen!! The Boyz miraculously Un-Leveled the Stars for a miserable 56 runs. In Level's defense, they were forced to play their Level NO Stars team.
Congratulations to Junction Boyz!! Keep it up and hope to see you in the second rounds!!...
