Power Volleyball Club FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Whether you are new to club volleyball or a returning player, we realize there are questions you may have about Power Volleyball. Before tryouts in December, we suggest reading to avoid any surprises during the season!

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN OPERATING?

Formerly known as Pirates Volleyball, PVC was founded in the fall of 2010 by Donna Alexander and Chris Halvorsen.  We started the club to help develop our school athletes to be more competitive.  We are a small Club that runs up to 5 teams a season

WHAT DO YOUR TRYOUTS LOOK LIKE?

The tryouts are 2-3 sessions in length, where coaches evaluate athletes for their teams. Athletes are guaranteed the first two tryouts sessions.  Unsuccessful athletes will be released after the second tryout and will be notified via letter, email , website post, or a phone call.  When planning tryouts we encourage all athletes and parents to research all club options.  We invite you to visit the Volleyball Manitoba website to get an indication of how many volleyball clubs there are for your son or daughter with respect to their age category.

WHERE ARE TRYOUTS?  HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO TRYOUT?

Tryouts are December 9-11 depending on age category.  Athletes must pre-register before they can attend. Once you register, there is a $40 tryout fee(includes 2-3 tryout sessions) that must be sent via e transfer to pvcclubvolleyball@gmail.com

WHAT ARE THE COSTS FOR THE SEASON?

POWER is a non profit organization that is run by volunteers.  Costs for the upcoming season can be difficult to estimate because they are dependent on set fees from Volleyball Manitoba, Volleyball Canada, and gym facilities. Fees are estimated slightly higher to ensure costs are covered for the season.  Teams may see a refund at the end of season.

Our costs for the 2023 season were $1300 for 14U, $1300 for 15U,  which includes PVC gear package, all tournament registration fees, Provincials registration, required coaches certifications, gym rentals, insurance, equipment, Admin fees, team hotel in Brandon, shared cost of coaches’ travel expenses and accommodations for out of town tournament in Brandon, and team honorariums and PVC year end windup. We anticipate that our costs for the 2024 season to be similar although tournament entry fees have risen.

WHAT DAYS OF THE WEEK DO YOU PRACTICE AND WHERE?

At PVC, we organize the schedules based on a variety of factors such as coaches availability and gym availability. Generally, we practice 2-3X a week between Monday-Thursday, coaches may add a day either during the week or on the weekend. Most of our practices are in gymnasiums located in the Louis Riel School Division and Pembina Trails School Division.

ARE THERE WEEKLY GAMES OR A LEAGUE THAT YOU PLAY IN?

PVC does not compete in a weekly league.  But it is not uncommon to have one or two mini tournaments during the week.  Most tournaments occur on a Friday, Saturday and sometimes a Sunday.

HOW MANY TOURNAMENTS DO YOU PARTICIPATE IN?

Our teams participate in 4-5 local tournaments and one out of town tournament in Brandon.  National Championships are optional, PVC does not make this mandatory, but it is encouraged at the 16 & 17 U age categories.  Parents and Coaches will decide after team selection if they want to participate in Nationals (costs for this are not included in Club fees).

DO YOU COMPETE IN PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS?

Yes, all PVC teams compete in Provincials.  The registration fee is included in Club fees. Additional travel costs are not included if Provincials are not in the city.

WHERE ARE NATIONALS IN 2024?

May 15 – 26:

Edmonton, Alberta, 14U Boys, 15U, 16U, 17U, 18U – Edmonton EXPO Centre

ARE THERE PAYMENT PLANS?

All club fees are paid via e transfer, full payment is preferred.  Those that require a payment plan, can contact Club Director Donna Alexander to make arrangements.  All fees must be paid by March 15.  Athletes who have not paid in full will not be eligible to participate in Provincials and Nationals.

ARE THERE ANY BURSARIES AVAILABLE FOR LOW/MIDDLE INCOME FAMILIES?

PVC funds an athlete bursary program each season, for athletes and families who may require financial assistance. We also offer support with applications to outside organizations, like KidSport.

DO YOU ORGANIZE FUNDRAISING OPPORTUNITIES?

Individual teams are encouraged to organize fundraising opportunities and PVC will offer support with your team efforts.  It is important to note, all fundraising is optional and monies raised go towards the individual athlete who fundraised.
