- Canvas Student Tour: Click on this link to complete a quick Canvas tour.
- ARC Gmail: It is essential that you activate your ARC Gmail account ASAP which is my primary source for contacting you. You will be able to redirect this account to a personal email, if you prefer. Please do this now!
- Los Rios Apps: You will be expected to participate in creating some collaborative documents so be sure that you are always logged into Google Docs using this login portal. You will regularly use Google Drive through Los Rios Apps to complete collaborate work in groups.
Other Software Requirements
Most of the requirements below are pre-built into computers and won't require you to install or add anything onto your computer or mobile device. However if you run into any technical issues these software requirements might help you to resolve them.
- Internet Browser: Canvas seems to work well with all browsers just be sure that you have updated to the most current version. However VoiceThread works best in Chrome and Firefox browsers; you will not be able to record audio using Safari or Microsoft Edge, unless you are using the app on your mobile device.
- Word Processing: You will definitely need to submit some documents this semester so you will need a word processing program. Regardless of what software you use you are required to submit all files as a Rich Text Format (RTF), Word document (DOC or DOCX), or Portable Document File (PDF). Any other formats will not be accepted.
- Video: Throughout the semester you will be accessing video links and other simulations so be sure that you have an up-to-date video player installed (such as Windows Media Player or RealPlayer or Quicktime). You will also need to install the most recent version of JAVA and Shockwave on your device(s).
- Document Viewer: I post many related course documents as PDFs so you will need to download the free Adobe Acrobat Viewer on your device(s) if you don't have it already.
Additional Apps / Mobile Apps
This semester you will also be required to use most of the following apps however you do not have to download or install any software. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND creating a FREE account with these apps and downloading them on your mobile device or bookmarking these websites on your computer for easy access without logging into Canvas, however that is entirely up to you. All of these resources can be accessed once logged into our class website in Canvas without the requirement to download.
- Line: for iOS and Android and Web Interface. This app can be used for contacting me directly through text message, voice, and/or video calls. I will use this for my online student hour on Thursday or you can just reach me via email during that time. How to find me and etiquette for Line (PDF): https://ic.arc.losrios.edu/~hokersl/Printables/Line_StudentHour.pdf
- Quizlet: for iOS and Android. The simulations in Quizlet are great for studying concepts and theories, but are not required. However I will be offering extra credit to students who use them (see the Syllabus for more information about how to earn extra credit). Here is a helpful link how to use Quizlet: https://quizlet.com/help
- Slideshare: for iOS and Android. The weekly tutorials are posted in Canvas through SlideShare however you can easily access these tutorials directly on your mobile device if you download this app.
- Padlet: for iOS and Android and Chrome. You are required to use Padlet for several class projects. Although you do not have to create a free account I strongly recommend doing it because it allows you to go back and edit your post and automatically identifies your work with your name. It's up to you if you want to download the app. Here is a link with instructions how to create your free Padlet account and to post comments in a Padlet.
