As a preceptor in the clinical sleep setting, you will serve as a role model and clinical resource person for a specific period of time.
As a resource person for these individuals, you will have four general roles:
Role Model: As a role model, the staff RPSGT demonstrates effective communication and interpersonal skills, in addition to demonstrating the technical skills of Sleep Technologists.
Educator: As an educator, the RPSGT helps to guide the clinical experiences for the learner. The RPSGT will determine if a learner is demonstrating the appropriate knowledge and skill as they progress through their clinical experience. The RPSGT assists the learner in becoming proficient in performing the functions of Sleep Technologists.
Advisor: As an advisor, the RPSGT is in a helping role, providing assistance to the student when requested, advising the clinical director when necessary, and aiding the learner to gain the clinical experiences needed.
Evaluator: As an evaluator, the RPSGT provides formal and informal feedback to the learner that is objective and based on achievement of expected outcomes. The RPSGT participates in the evaluation process, providing feedback which motivates learning by validating that the student is or is not achieving the expected outcomes or by identifying additional needed knowledge or skills.

Preceptor Qualifications
Expertise in sleep procedures and therapies for a given clinical site.
A commitment to the sleep profession.
The ability to develop collaborative relationships with faculty and students.
A willingness to share project ideas and assist students in selecting experiences.
A willingness to supervise and assist students in meeting course objectives.
Preceptor role in Student Instruction & Evaluation:
Aid the student in various clinical experiences to facilitate learning.
Assume responsibility for determining which experiences are appropriate for student involvement.
Supervise the student as they perform skills and work with clients in the clinical site.
Maintain communication with the student and faculty.
Provide guidance and feedback to the student.
Participate with the faculty and the student in evaluation of the student's performance in the clinical setting.
Complete verification of competency and evaluation of performance when requested by student or faculty.
Preceptor Responsibilities
A preceptor is assigned at each clinical affiliate. This individual must be a Sleep Technologist (in compliance with state regulations) and is on site when students are rotating to the facility.
The preceptor coordinates the scheduling of students (this may be done preceptor to Program Director or preceptor to student).
The preceptor provides orientation and instruction to each student during rotations, explaining the policies and procedures of the Sleep Center.
The preceptor evaluates the student throughout each clinical night (verbal and written), to include, completing the documentation which the student is responsible for providing.
Evaluations:
Each student needs to have a minimum of 2 affective evaluations completed by the preceptor. These would be completed on 2 separate clinical nights. Ideally one would be completed on the 4th clinical night and the other on the 8th clinical night. Click on the link below to access the short evaluation.
Proficiencies:
Prior to entering clinical education, the students had completed detailed competencies for the skills Sleep Technologists need to perform their job. These competencies have been grouped into their larger skill sets, as they are performed together in the clinical setting. An evaluation of each set of skills in regards to the student's cognitive, psychomotor and affective abilities, will determine if the student is proficient in these skill sets prior to graduation.
