Ways to get involved!!

In theatre, you will learn deadlines, how to work in teams and alone, troubleshooting techniques and many more skills that bleed into the rest of your lives. From theatre, you can become the leader and follower, you can be in the spotlight or make the spotlight brighter for someone else. There are so many ways theatre builds teams and cooperation as well as figuring things out for yourself. There are countless ways to get involved with the theatre department:

Behind the Scenes Jobs:

Stage Management / Assistant SM

    • SM works directly under director for control of production

    • SM runs the show and controls all cues

    • SM works with the director and cast/crew for all functions of show

    • SM delegates responsibilities to ASM

    • SM / ASM understand all cast/crew responsibilities, needs and communicate regularly with director

    • SM / ASM complete rehearsal and production notes/feedback

Running Crew Heads (Typically the managers/designers listed below)

    • Leads work backstage during productions with SM/ASM for cues

    • Responsible for all backstage cues including set changes, character/prop/light cues

    • Responsible for maintaining show performance etiquette backstage and dealing with issues by communicating with SM/ASM

Shop Foreman

    • Works closely with the Set Designer and Director to ensure quality and concept are followed.

    • Organizes and Guides the build of the Scenery

    • Responsible for all construction crew safety and training

Prop Manager

    • Works closely with the Set Designer and Director to ensure quality and concept are followed.

    • Organizes and Guides the build and collection of props.

    • Responsible for all prop crew efficiency and quality

Running Crew

    • Work directly under Crew heads to complete all backstage cues

    • Move sets on/off stage, complete lighting/sound cues and helping cast to make cue

Lights

    • Lighting designer (for shows, performances, showcases, etc.)

    • Lighting board operator

    • Lighting technician (moving, storing, focusing, hanging lights, etc.)

    • Spotlight: Occasional tech for spotlight operation as needed for productions

Sound

    • Sound designer

    • Sound board operator

    • Sound engineer (mics, cables, wiring, hanging, mixing, etc.)

Costume Manager

    • Works closely with the Costume Designer and Director to ensure quality and concept are followed.

    • Organizes and Guides the build and collection of costumes.

    • Responsible for all costume crew efficiency and quality

Costume/Makeup

    • Costume/makeup designer

    • Costume/makeup technicians

    • Cleans black box and dressing room areas before/after shows

House Manager / House Techs

    • House Manager works with Boosters in regards to the lobby

    • HM works with techs to design lobby flow and ambience

    • Work together to provide excellent service for guests in regards to concessions, flower sales, direct contact, tickets, programs, etc.

Roles for Performers:

    • Lead Roles

    • Supporting Roles

    • Understudies

    • Chorus/Ensemble Roles

    • Dancing Roles/Dance Captain/Choreographer

    • Cameos/Walk-Ons

With these Roles comes lots of hard work:

    • Character Study

    • Memorize Lines

    • Possibly sing in a group or solo

    • Participate in vocal and physical warm-ups

    • Take Risks
