The International Thespian Society (ITS), an honorary group for middle and high school theatre students, is a division of the Educational Theatre Association (EdTA). The mission of ITS is to honor student excellence in the theatre arts. Thespian troupes are just a component of our school’s theatre program. ITS membership offers many valuable benefits, services, and opportunities.
HOW DO I BECOME A THESPIAN?
Thespian hours and points should not be confused or compared with hours associated with the Drama Club point system.
The points system listed on the EdTA website is merely a guideline for awarding points. The determination of the value of participation is the decision and the discretion of the individual school sponsor(s)/director(s). Sponsors may award up to two (2) additional points for any task performed with the exceptional merit according to the quality of effort and work accomplished.
The following are general guidelines for the awarding of points:
To attain Thespian membership, a student must earn ten (10) points, five (5) of which must be acquired at the school where he or she is to be inducted.
One (1) point represents approximately ten (10) hours of excellent work. See the Official High School Thespian Point System for more detailed point information.
No student will be elected into the Society. No student will be denied membership if he or she has accumulated the required ten points and has fulfilled all membership requirements.
A student must participate in at least one (1) production, not including student directed productions.
Students may earn up to (5) points toward induction through participation at the middle school level; in community, children’s, or professional theatre; or in other activities in the performing arts.
When students qualify for membership, they should be notified that they may join the International Thespian Society. Students should be informed of the cost of the membership fee and date/site of the induction ceremony.
After Thespians have attained membership, further recognition for their outstanding work in theatre arts may be indicated by awarding stars for each additional ten (10) points – or one hundred hours – earned (to a maximum of four [4] stars).
