When Nance was a maid

When Nance was a maid

Of naught was she afraid.

No man could daunt her;

She would flaunt her

    independence -- oh!

Then Nance her Robert found

As surely she was bound;

And he has claimed --

    but has he trained? --

    her independence -- oh!

And now they will be wed --

So both of them have said.

And still they may

Their homage pay,

    to independence -- oh!
