When completing the PQP Part 1 course, I was surprised to learn that the communication skills I use daily as a Department Head and guidance counsellor are actually called personal leadership resources. I know I am an effective guidance counsellor. A major reason why I find myself working late at night is because I spend a lot of time listening and problem solving with students. I have often been coached from some colleagues that I need to manage my time better by adapting a closed door system. I have never followed through on this advice, feeling that although efficient, it does not match my teaching style. It is reaffirming my belief that I do not need to change, that in fact I am doing the right thing. It also affirms that the qualities that make me a good guidance counsellor are valued in an administrator. Evidence of my personal leadership skills in action are included in the following three samplers:
A copy of an email I sent to my mentor. This email summarizes my approach to on-the-spot problem solving, essentially showcasing my ability to "think on my feet" and resolve issues timely and effectively.
A summary of a particularly hectic day at school on Friday February 14, 2014. Despite the fact that I was feeling ill, I was able to draw upon my resilience and optimism to stay at work and engage in student success activities.
