In my heart, I feel I was nominated for this award simply because I listen and care. When a person in authority is afforded the opportunity to have another open up and share private worries and concerns, the only appropriate response is to honour the preciousness of the gift of being chosen as the "safe adult" and to respond with respectfulness. The course of action must be reflective of the need of the person/student in conversation. This is something I am careful to remember with every interaction with students. By keeping respect as the foundation, it ensures one is able to respond in emotionally appropriate ways.
This can be a challenge, especially when working with an angry or hurt upset individual. However, by asking oneself, "how would I want someone to treat me if I was upset", and then taking your own advice, ensures the best outcome possible, even regarding difficult conversations.
The nomination letters included below showcase evidence of how I go about this on a daily basis.
