REVIEW OF CHRISTMAS GUITAR ON MINOR 7th WEBSITE
"...Cunningham mixes his seemingly limitless talent on guitar, flute, bass, cello and mandolin into a tapestry of acoustic splendor that will put you in a holiday mood with the first notes from his mandolin 15 seconds into "The First Noel." He brings a new life and spirit to these carols that I was not expecting. My favorites included the refreshing fretwork on "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" and the incredible synergy created from the guitar and cello on "O Come All Ye Faithful," which takes this classic melody to a new level. Christmas Guitar is an impressive and inspiring recording throughout!" - James Filkins

A little video in honor of President's Day. Honest Abe dropped in over the weekend, so I thought I'd play him a tune to cheer him up. This song, the "Battle Cry of Freedom" seemed to do the trick."Battle Cry of Freedom", written in 1862 by George F. Root, sides firmly with the Union cause. It is still heard, usually in conjunction with presentations about the American Civil War, most notably in recent years, on the soundtrack for Ken Burns' series on the Civil War.
This arrangement for solo guitar is very similar to the performance of the song on my 3rd CD, Wayfaring Stranger, available from CD Baby. Also available as mp3 download.

At live shows I play an instrumental medley incorporating the traditional tunes Johnny Has Gone For A Soldier (Shule Agra), When Johnny Comes Marching Home and some variations. A partial version appears on my Back To Morgantown CD. A shortened version of the whole medley can be viewed in a video.

I received word that I am a Southeast Regional Finalist in the Mountain Stage/New Song Contest a few days ago. The folks there requested a video by today and I had to scramble to shoot one with this particular song. The song is Out Of My Mind, a song I wrote set in the early 1900's during the Mine Wars in West Virginia. More background info on YouTube

*** I was just checking out Whole Wheat Radio. Those good folks have been playing songs from my BACK TO MORGANTOWN and WAYFARING STRANGER CD's. Based on the the listener ratings, a couple of my instrumentals (Whitewater and Mountain Sky) are the favorites.
5/7/09
*** BACK TO MORGANTOWN (Dan's 4th CD) will soon be available at Tamarack. Tamarack draws half a million visitors annually at it's location off I-77 and I-64 (Exit 45 at Beckley). Tamarack is a one-stop-shop for West Virginia culture, heritage, handcrafts, fine art, regional cuisine and music.
***Also, some very late news-(just ran across the playlist)
Eddie O'Strange in New Zealand played "Nelsonville 1970" on his Town and Country Radio Show. That was waay back on April 23 of 2007!! "Nelsonville 1970" is from Dan's 3rd CD, WAYFARING STRANGER.

*** Many thanks to Jay Adkins in the U. K. (Off The Chart Radio) for playing my music. He led off Show 31 on April 18 with "The Judgment of John Brown" from my "Wayfaring Stranger" CD. There is the mp3 link (below) to listen to the show after the fact...it's a big file, and it says you have to sign up for a download service to get large files, but I did it OK without signing up for anything...but it's still a big file!!

*** I also want to let you know about Dan Herman at Radio Crystal Blue (www.radiocrystalblue.com). He has played some of my tunes in the past. I also applaud his selections in the instances of choosing "Have I Been Away Too Long?" and "So Glad". Both of these songs had an unconventional structure but are among my favorites. They would have no chance on commercial radio on the basis of structure alone. I hope to hear some tunes from BACK TO MORGANTOWN on Radio Crystal Blue in the future.
