Appalachian Song - Dan Cunningham
Track 3
song info
ANGEL BAND is a traditional gospel song. Wikipedia says the tune was originally called "My Latest Sun Is Sinking Fast" and the lyrics by Jefferson Hascall. The tune is by William Batchelder Bradbury, but I have taken some liberties in my rendition. Many people are familiar with the tune thru the movie O Brother Where Art Thou?
here are the lyrics:
My latest sun is sinking fast
My race is nearly run
My longest trials now are past
My triumph has begun
(chorus) Oh come angel band
Come and around me stand
Bear me away on your snow white wings
To my immortal home
Bear me away on you snow white wings
To my immortal home
Oh bear my longing soul to him
Who bled and died for me
Whose blood now cleanses from all sin
And brings me victory
[chorus]
I know I'm near the holy ranks
Of friends and loved ones dear
I brush the dew on Jordan's banks
The crossing must be near
(This last verse is not heard in my version, but a great stanza none-the-less)
I've almost gained my heavenly home
My spirit loudly sings
The holy ones, behold they come
I hear the noise of wings
words and music are in the public domain
