Appalachian Song - Dan Cunningham

"I loved the song DEVIL ANSE..." - Matt WYCE 88.1 FM

Track 4

DEVIL ANSE is a tune about the patriarch of the Hatfield Clan, William Anderson Hatfield (known as Devil Anse), and the Hatfield - McCoy feud. The third verse refers to an actual event - after years of violence in the feud, Devil Anse was converted in 1911, baptized in Island Creek, and founded a Church Of Christ congregation.

here are the lyrics:

You better pray, you better pray

that Devil Anse ain't comin' here today

If You been causin' trouble  And if comes for you

You better have a mind of what to say

You ain't never seen him but you might have the chance

You'll know him when you see him, Devil Anse

Don't ever go, don't ever go across the river there below

That devil owns the mountains and he don't like our kin

or any of the people that you know

You ain't never seen him but you might have the chance

You'll know him when you see him, Devil Anse

The foolish man goes looking to settle up the score

You'll find a heap o trouble, maybe more

Don't you believe, Don't you believe  The devils' got religion now they say

Baptised in the Island Creek yet still I am afeared

we'll find out for sure on Judgement Day

I thought the kindly thing to do was warn you in advance

If you ain't never seen him then might get the chance

You're treading on his kingdom, Devil Anse
