Appalachian Song - Dan Cunningham

Track 8

JOHN HENRY  in this case is a solo guitar instrumental of the old traditional tune. John Henry worked digging the Big Bend tunnel for the C&O railroad at Talcott WV in 1870. The tunnel, more than a mile and a quarter long, was completed in 1873. Recurring rock falls claimed many lives, with the workers being quickly buried in unmarked graves. The heavy dust in the tunnel impaired visibility and caused serious health problems and many deaths. Legend says John Henry died after a contest against a mechanized steam drill. A statue stands in his honor at the mouth of the Big Bend tunnel (now the Great Bend Tunnel) in Talcott.
