Belgian National Committee for Pure and Applied Physics

The Belgian National Committee for Pure and Applied Physics (or BNCPAP) is affiliated to and mandated by the Royal Academies for Science and the Arts of Belgium (RASAB). It is the Belgian Liaison to IUPAP, the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics.

Our main activities are:

  • Nominations for membership of IUPAP Commissions: The BNCPAP presents, to the General Assembly of IUPAP, nominations for the participation of Belgian experts in the different IUPAP Commissions. The number of national experts is linked to the financial contribution of a country to the organisation and is set to 4 for Belgium.
  • Research in Physics in Belgium: In 2005, the NCPAP started the compilation of short reports on the main physics research topics in Belgium, both theoretical and experimental. These are written by prominent Belgian researchers, actively involved in the IUPAP Commissions, and were published in 2006 in Physicalia Magazine and posted on the websites of the NCPAP and of the Belgian Physical Society. Updates are continuously ongoing and can be found under Reports on Research Activities. Every updated report is also published in BPhy-Magazine , the on-line successor of Physicalia Magazine, by the Belgian Physical Society. Recently, we have also started a Calendar of Events organised by the Belgian research groups.
  • Colloquia: Every two years, the NCPAP organises, at the premises of the Royal Academies for Science and the Arts of Belgium, a one-day colloquium on a topic in Physics that is likely to attract a broad audience, including teachers from the secondary, bachelor and master students, researchers active in the field and interested laymen.
