The 29th Southern Africa Bursars of Independent Schools Association (SABISA) national conference was held in late October 2015 in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, where 150 delegates spent time exploring risk-related topics from a variety of speakers over three days. Two of the presentations were delivered by Dr Peter Tobin, founder of PTC, in his role as a strategic partner of IACT-Africa. Dr Tobin's papers were titled "Bursars, Business Managers & the POPI Act: Key drivers for successful compliance in Independent Schools" and "IT Governance for Independent Schools: What Bursars and Business Managers need to know".
"Having had exposure to the work of independent schools at first hand through the education of our two daughters, I am well aware of the importance of good governance that addresses a wide variety of risks that our independent schools need to manage" says Dr Tobin. "The two papers were complementary, not only to the theme of the conference, where the main theme was 'Business risk assessment - a risky business' but also to growing levels of awareness within South Africa as well as globally of the risks associated with the governance and management of information and information technology".
In preparation for the conference an online survey of SABISA members was conducted. The 100 response limit was quickly reached and represented a 30% participation rate, an unusually high level for such surveys, even when addressing the needs of a closed community of interest such as SABISA."The survey results indicated a high level of awareness in both subject areas covered in my papers" adds Dr Tobin, "and opens the door to further discussions between SABISA members about how to address the issues I raised.
