As part of its regular series of briefings on current issues the Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) recently hosted a morning workshop on "Protection of Personal Information (POPI) Act: why it should be taken seriously".
The workshop was facilitated by Dr Peter Tobin (in his role as a consultant with Grant Thornton) and Esther Pedro, Senior Manager, IT Advisory, Grant Thornton Johannesburg. "The large number of delegates attending showed the popularity of the topic" says Dr Tobin, "and we had the added benefit of a local case study to illustrate the session". Mr Dumile Cele, CEO of the DCCI, in thanking the presenters described the presentation as "truly enthralling".
Downes Murray International (DMI), South Africa's leading fundraising consultancy, had earlier in 2015 engaged Grant Thornton to advise them on how to prepare for compliance with the POPI Act. The presentation included a profile of the DMI POPI project, highlighting the leadership displayed by the executive team at DMI in committing to meet the good governance expectations of a wide range of stakeholders in their POPI compliance initiative.
Grant Thornton Johannesburg generously sponsored the speakers, whilst Grant Thornton Durban sponsored the catering for the day.Grant Thornton and DMI also co-sponsored a later briefing for DMI stakeholders where issues of specific interest in the fundraising sector relating to POPI were discussed.
