More than two dozen delegates, representing ten Development Finance Institutions (DFI) organisations drawn from five Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) countries recently successfully completed a four day workshop in Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E). The workshop was organised by the SADC Development Finance Resource Centre (DFRC), based in Gaborone, Botswana, and Dr Peter Tobin was invited to be the lead facilitator for the workshop. "Dr Tobin has worked with us a number of times before, and as we have come to expect he demonstrated not only a mastery of his subject matter but delivered the workshop content in an engaging, dynamic and at times entertaining way" says Kingsley Mmipi, Programmes Officer with the SADC-DFRC, "and as we have already worked with Dr Tobin in South Africa, Botswana and Lesotho, it was good to expand to another of our SADC member countries with his latest workshop".Â
The workshop content was based on the World Bank "10 Steps to a Results-Based Monitoring and Evaluation System", and included a number of practical exercises and video-based case studies. There was also a guest speaker, Mr Morne Jacobs, representing the Institute for Performance Management (IPM) based in South Africa. Mr Jacobs presented on and demonstrated the IPM Lebelela offering, a comprehensive web-based system which supports the principles of M&E which were covered in the workshop. The workshop delegates were also set a team challenge to develop a presentation and create a short video which would support the adoption of M&E in the organisation chosen by the syndicate members. "The standard of presentation content and delivery was well up to international best practice that I have experienced over the last 20 years" says Dr Tobin, "and I now see the delegates returning to their sponsoring organisations with new skills and knowledge, ready to take on the challenges of making M&E contribute to the goals of their DFIs".
