What do Turin in Italy, Bethlehem, Randburg and Cape Town in South Africa have in common? These were all locations where team members of the JvR Africa Group (www.jvrafricagroup.co.za ) recently participated in a learning session about the POPI Act, South Africa’s legislation which addresses the Protection of Personal Information (POPI). Dr Peter Tobin, a strategic partner of IACT-Africa and Margarida Ferraz, a certified IACT-Africa POPI Agent, helped to facilitate a dynamic and interactive fast-paced mini-workshop at the invitation of Dr Jopie de Beer, CEO of the JvR Africa Group.
“Having had the opportunity to learn from Dr Tobin’s in-depth understanding of the POPI Act when I attended a regional congress of the SA Council for Business Women, I did not hesitate to ask him to spend time bringing the POPI Act to the attention of my team” says Dr de Beer. “One of our key roles is to ensure all our stakeholders can have confidence that not only do we abide strictly by the ethical rules of conduct under the Health Professions Act, but we are also pro-active in understanding our obligations and responsibilities in terms of legislative compliance.”
“What’s interesting about the early adopters in terms of compliance with the POPI Act” says Dr Tobin, “is that those organizations can turn their commitment to compliance to their advantage, through enhanced client trust and the benefits that brings.”
