As I prepare for graduation I have spent some time contemplating the new role I am about to assume. After researching the topic of transition I have committed to refrain from the temptation to rush into the first job. But instead to intentionally seek a position that will help me to transition well into the new Nurse Practitioner role. After much research and some thought I look to incorporate the following criteria to facilitate my transition:-
- Understand the transition:- Have a clear understanding of the new NP scope of practice. Talk to faculty, network with other NP's at National and State organizations.
- Set Realistic Expectations: Learn to give myself a break, expect a learning curve in this new role. Ask for regular feedback and know how to receive it.
- Seek a Formal Orientation: As a new NP interviewing for my first NP job, I will inquire about incorporating a formal orientation and length of time provided for employer-provided learning. I want to make this a priority in negotiations. I will pursue an employer that will support me during this transitional period. I will seek an employer or collaborating physician whom places a priority in goal-setting and open communication.
- Find a Mentor: Cultivate a network of support of NP's from national, local organizations. Forge collaborative relationships with new colleagues. Keep in touch with USC peers and faculty.
