As a Nurse Practitioner, I aspire to combine nursing’s compassion and skill with self- directed independence to diagnose and treat patients holistically. My passion is to encourage patients to take a deliberate and pro-active approach to living a healthy lifestyle. I want to educate patients on the importance of incorporating healthy practices into all aspects of their lives, the biological, psychosocial, and spiritual.
In 2017 I completed my first Reebok Spartan Trifecta. The Trifecta consists of 3 grueling obstacle races of varying distances completed in one calendar year. My favorite memories of these races are the human chains and ladders teams make so that other team mates can climb over 10 foot walls or get across raging waters. The months of training with a team to complete one of these races best represents the ethical principle and the central importance of human relationships. I joined Team Runners Lane to complete my trifecta goal. We trained together for a whole year, three times a week. The camaraderie of the team was fun, but most importantly the accountability and relationships that were forged and cultivated weekly proved to us that we could change. These relationships gave us the strength and willingness to be a partner in this process with our leaders and one another. As we linked arms as a team covered in mud and sweat to cross the finish line together, we knew the experiences we shared throughout the race and the year of training melded our lives together in many ways. Individually we were each physically and mentally tough, but as a team we were resilient, and strong. Our relationships gave us purpose, our group gave us community, and our friendships brought us love and hope.
As a nurse I have seen first-hand the importance of human relationship. I have witnessed the power of what a comforting touch and a smile can make to a suffering patient. As a manger of different levels of employees, I know that forging trusting relationships with my employees have helped me to cultivate a motivating and productive work force. Working along-side other professionals in the healthcare field is imperative to providing the best care for our patients. Inter-collaboration with other professionals will entail stable trusting relationships amongst all professions. It is the centrality of human relationship that will make the difference in these professional relationships. (Netting, 2013)
As a nurse practitioner I would like to make an impact in primary care by strengthening the relationship between primary care giver and patient. Building strong trusting relationships through consistent follow-up, good listening techniques and patient centered care is how I plan to approach my practice.
During the last five years of my career, I have had the unique opportunity to be involved in the start-up of a physician-owned Ambulatory Surgery Center. I have learned a great deal about the Medicare regulatory requirements needed to open and operate an Ambulatory Surgical Center. My responsibilities required me to have a complete understanding of the business. In my role, I worked closely with the Medical Director to ensure we were compliant with all CMS standards for an accredited surgical center. I gained an in-depth understanding of Medicare and managed care contracts, billing requirements, and reimbursement rates. In addition, my role required me to manage human resources, equipment and materials required to perform the surgeries. My involvement in all parts of the business has helped me to contribute directly to the profit margins of the business. I know this experience and knowledge will help me make sound and efficient decisions in my practice as a FNP.
My husband and I will celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary this year. We have 2 beautiful daughters. My eldest is nineteen years old, and is in her sophomore year at the college. My youngest is eighteen years old, and is graduating from high school. My marriage and the family we have cultivated over these 25 years has been my greatest accomplishment and treasure. My faith is another important part of my identity. It is the cornerstone of who I am, and my faith family is one I draw strength from in times of need and plenty.
