Statement of Goals
Healthcare has always been in my blood. As a four year old, I can remember my father, a doctor, seeing patients at all hours of the day and night in his office below our house in Georgetown, Guyana. I was always intrigued by my father’s medical career, but it was the devoted nurses whom ultimately influenced my decision to choose a career in nursing. I had a front-line view of how the nurses interacted with the patients and their families, and how a simple smile or touch would help calm the patients’ fears. I also witnessed how quick and intelligent decisions made by the nurses helped to save lives. It was this devotion to patient care that led me to become a nurse. As a Nurse Practitioner, I aspire to combine nursing’s compassion and skill with self- directed independence to diagnose and treat patients holistically. My passion is to encourage patients to take a deliberate and pro-active approach to living a healthy lifestyle. I want to educate patients on the importance of incorporating healthy practices into all aspects of their lives, the physical, emotional, psychosocial, and spiritual.
My 27 years of nursing have allowed me to practice nursing on many patients with many different diagnoses. My experiences in Telemetry, Cardiac Cath Lab, Emergency Room, Cardio-Vascular Intensive Care and Post-Anesthesia have given me the opportunity to see how our healthcare system can help to save, care for, and prolong a person’s life. However, during these years, I have also seen the revolving door of hospital admissions among “frequent flyer” patients. Lack of consistent follow up, lack of education, and unhealthy lifestyles lead many patients back into the hospital with worsening diagnoses and comorbidities. I have cherished my time at the bedside and I am proud of the work I have been able to do through out the years to save patient’s lives, but at this stage of my career, I would like to make a greater impact on the front lines of primary care. I would like to provide consistent care by building long-term relationships with patients. As a Family Nurse Practitioner, I would use my practice to promote healthy primary prevention and early detection, using a patient centered approach to patient care.
