My second practicum was in a thriving pediatrics clinic located in Clinton, South Carolina. I was able to learn a great deal from Michelle Crowe PA-C who was my preceptor. Most of my experience has been with the adult population, so I was very apprehensive about the pediatric population. I must say by the end of this journey, I felt refreshed and was able to think a lot about who I was becoming as a nurse practitioner and my future in this field. I absolutely adored pediatrics. I was excited to see the children's smiling faces, calming their fears and fixing all the “boo-boos” in their little worlds. There were many days of swabbing tonsils for strep, looking in wax filled ears, talking about brushing teeth and eating healthy, but there were also those days we had very intriguing cases that made me use every skill that was taught to me over these past two years.
The rural, underserved population of this community consisted of Medicaid recipients. Many of the children in the community were provided much needed access to preventive patient care through education, screenings, and immunizations. I truly found work with the pediatric and rural populations very gratifying.
