The experience of my complex adult clinical site was spent at the medical clinic at the Spartanburg County Detention Center in Spartanburg, South Carolina. My preceptor was Cristy Barbee FNP-C. I will admit I was very apprehensive about this clinical experiences.
A correctional nurse practitioner is a provider that cares for and treats inmates and other detainees in correctional facilities and jails. These professionals choose to go behind prison walls every day to attend to the health needs of detainees. They treat or perform both routine and emergency medical procedures. It takes a special sort of person to work behind these walls. Despite the fact that correctional nurses work with individuals that commit – sometimes heinous – crimes, for example, they must be able to treat each one with objectivity and respect, as well as compassion and sometimes assertiveness.
Everyday was a challenge, and pushed me beyond my comfort zone. Working in the jail I had to become comfortable with the fact that I could possibly be working in close proximity to some of South Carolinas' most dangerous people, including sexual predators and murderers.
This experience gave me the opportunity to think critically and strengthened my clinical, and physical examination skills.
