Link to audio recording of Adv. I play test for June 4 (you must tap your foot to the half note!!). Cut time at 72bpm. https://drive.google.com/open?id=15ClHr1CxSE0oXIZS2X7JTvGW0Ue-4J0H
Be sure you are practicing slowly at home so that every single note comes out clearly before you go on to the next. This may need literally hundreds of repetitions. Make a chart, and put a mark on it for every time you get through the entire test with zero mistakes, not concerning yourself yet with the speed. You must not guess at even one note; all notes must be spot on and correct, even if you have to think for several seconds between notes. Correct means beautiful tone, articulation, and in tune. Once you can get through the test without having to take time to carefully think before playing the notes, then you can set a metronome and play it slowly. Set it at whatever speed you can play every note and the rhythms with zero mistakes. If that means the eighth note gets the count instead of the quarter note (twice as slow) then that is ok. Again, this will take hundreds of repetitions. When you are smooth and fluent and bored because it is so easy and you have not missed one note in the last 5-10 play-throughs, then you can speed it up. This is how several of our students get perfect scores and have to do playoffs at faster and faster tempi. For the tests on the PCMS Warm Up Sheet, the tempo for Intermediate Band has been 92 beats a minute on the quarter note; in Advanced Band the tempi starts at 116 and then goes to 120 by mid-year. Many of the tests are the same in both classes - the scales from the PCMS Warm Up Sheet and the Jr. All-State audition music (our first test of the year). One year the trombone section had to do playoffs on almost every test with speeds up to 176 bpm.
In order to achieve higher play test scores and feel confident on the band music (and have more fun playing it!!!), you need to devote time at home. It takes 35 seconds to play the play tests from the warm up sheet. If you practice twice as slow it will take about 1 minute per repetition. For 200 run throughs, that is about 200 minutes. You may want to go even slower, so 400 minutes. I would do twice that amount of practice in a month, at least, in order to be able to get strong scores. That may seem like a lot, but it only comes to 30 minutes a day spread out over a month. Not only will this transform your playing, you will also get a lot of extra credit on your practice sheet that will boost your grade substantially. You will also likely move up several chairs in band and be confident when taking your tests in class. You may even make All-State Band.
Have fun with this! It is a game. You will see amazing improvement and enjoy playing your music more than ever.
