Your instrument needs to be in working order. An instrument that is not in good condition is going to make your life as a musician very frustrating. If you are renting your instrument from a music store, repairs and maintenance should be done through them. Most rental plans provide "insurance" where they will repair or replace it even if it is run over by a car. [director's note: no matter how many times they have heard the same etude for the Jr. All-State Audition, I am not encouraging parents or older siblings of middle school students to run over their instruments with your car just because it may be insured].
