Exhibition - Fernão Mendes Pinto, The Fascinated Gaze

Portugal celebrates this year the 500^th Anniversary of the Birth of Fernão Mendes Pinto, the 16^th century Portuguese traveller and author of “Peregrinação”, his well known posthumous publication with literary and historical values. With the upcoming celebrations of the 500 years of the relations between Thailand and Portugal in 2011, literatures on the history of two nations have started to gain interest of both Thai and Portuguese researchers and public, especially the one depicting the beginning period of the relations in the 16^th century and “Peregrinação” or “The Travels” in English, with its extensive information on the location and its people of Siam and the neighbouring lands travelled by the author, has been always one of the most quoted.

The 226 chapters of the traveller's personal memoirs during 21 years of his voyages from India to Japan are presented in this exhibition for the public without prior knowledge about the work.
