Welcome to Pamlico Soil and Water Conservation District! We are one of 96 conservation districts who work to assist landowners and agricultural producers with implementing conservation efforts on their land with Best-Management Practices (BMPs). We also do work and presentations to bring environmental education to interested schools, groups, and educational organizations. Our Mission
The mission of the Pamlico Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) is to conserve the soil, water, and related natural resources of Pamlico County by providing technical assistance, education, and information to carry out sound conservation and land use practices.
History
The Lower Neuse Soil and Water Conservation District was organized in December 1944; this multi-county district included Carteret, Craven, Jones, Onslow and Pamlico counties. In August 1972 an application was approved to divide the Lower Neuse District into five districts.
Pamlico Soil and Water Conservation District used to be called the Bay River Soil and Water Conservation District partnered with Craven and Carteret counties sharing the name, but with separate offices. In 1981, the separate counties split off into individual county districts due to differences in local conservation needs. Pamlico County retained the title of ‘Bay River Soil and Water Conservation District’ when the larger district was separated into three counties. In August of 2007 the Board voted to change the name from Bay River Soil and Water Conservation District to Pamlico Soil and Water Conservation District.
