Pinewood Derby is a longstanding tradition within Scouts and Pack 409. The first Pinewood Derby race was held May 15, 1953, and due to its popularity packs across the country made the event a part of their annual calendar.
Scouts build their own race cars from kits containing a block of pine wood, plastic wheels, and metal axles. Each Scout gets one kit to complete their Pinewood Derby car. They design their cars by cutting the wood, adding paint and decorations, and nailing on the wheels. The cars race in heats, and awards are given for a variety of categories, such as: best craftsmanship, best scout spirit, coolest car, wackiest car and fastest car.
The event is traditionally held in January.
