Boerne Texas
Our Pack was chartered in 1948 and is going strong with 119 scouts ranging in age from 5 to 11 years old. Pack 102 serves boys and girls from all over the Boerne area and meets every Tuesday from 6:30PM to 7:30PM at FUMC's Family Life Center, 205 James Street (Map below).
We are a Journey to Excellence Gold Level Recipient, the highest level units can obtain from BSA and the only unit in the area that has continually been designated a Baden Powell unit since 2017 for unit performance.
Part of what makes us a highly performing Pack is our core of volunteer leaders. Every leader has taken position specific training to better serve our youth and are encouraged to take one extra training as well. Some of these include Basic Adult Outdoor Orientation, Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills, Safe Swim, Wood Badge Advanced Leadership Training, and many more.

Pack 102 Takes Home Grand Champion for Second Year.
On September 3rd, 51 scouts helped decorate and participate in the 116th Kendall Co. Fair Parade. The theme this year was Mardis Gras and our scouts sure did "let the good times roll"! Their energy along with our wonderful volunteers Kristin Aljoe and Rachel Lange Wallace had the judges saying "Ça c’est bon"! The Pack was named Grand Champions of the parade, claiming the top honor presented at the event. Scouts handed out pencil and greeted folks along the Hill Country Mile as we made our way down Main Street to the sounds of zydeco music provide by our Fire Swords Den Leader, Bryce Karulak.
Smallest State Park in Texas Hike - August 2022
Pack 102 went a little "batty" with our hike at Old Tunnel State Park outside of Fredericksburg. What used to be part of the Old No. 9 Rail Road is now a haven for 3 million bats! Our intrepid hikers blazed a trail to the limestone tunnel to see the bats emerge at sundown! Join us for our September hike to take part of the fun.
Hill Country State Natural Area Hike - April 2022
We had five families join us for an overcast, perfect Spring Hike on April 23rd. We met in the parking lot at 9AM and started our hike around 9:30. Along the way we saw wild garlic, blooming barrel cactus, powderpuff mimosas, whose leaves close when you touch it, spittlebugs, dung beetles and other interesting geography and plants. The hike did not have too much elevation changes, and was pretty easy going. We made sure to take some breaks and check out the old structures that were left over from when the park was a working ranch. Overall, we hikes 4.76 miles and all of our families did an AMAZING job.
Pack 102 ventured South of San Antonio March 25-27th to spend two amazing nights under the stars. Thanks to the Aljoe family, the scouts had a weekend to remember filled with fishing, more fishing, and then taking a break from fishing to go fish! There were perch and bass aplenty that were biting at just about every worm that was dropped into the water. Along with the fun of a well stocked tank, we also went for a hike around the ranch and saw ducks, buzzards, hawks and lots of deer rubs. Our Scouts put on some great skits and some older brothers from Troop 102 helped with some run on skits!
Pack 102 has the most amazing scouts and families and we all had an awesome time!
We are excited to announce that Pack 102 has been awarded a Seed Grant from the UT Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. Pack 102 scouts and families partnered with City of Boerne Parks and Recreation Department to design and build a pollinator garden along the Old No. 9 Trail for our community, birds, bees, and butterflies to enjoy! Scouts learned how to sow seeds, mix soil and had a great time spreading seeds. We cannot wait to see what it will look like in the spring!
Read more about planting your own Native Wildflower Garden at the Native American Seed website.
We learned from last month hike to start a little earlier this month. Those Texas summers can get a little warm:) We had 34 scouts and families join us on this wonderful 3.4 mile hike. It was a wonderful time. Pictures coming soon!
At 10:00AM on a hot Hill Country morning, an intrepid group of 34 scouts, parents, and siblings took their first steps up the massive pink granite dome that is the centerpiece of Enchanted Rock State Natural Area. Rising about 425 feet above the surrounding terrain to an elevation of 1,825 feet above sea level, it’s the largest pink granite monadnock in the United States. Once reaching the top, families had a 360 degree view of the surrounding Hill Country. After hiking back down to the base, a group of families continued on and hiked along the base for another 5 miles! It was a great summer hike, but we will start earlier next time.

Yes, you read that correctly, and that’s exactly what we did in April 2021at the San Antonio Zoo.
The Scouts and their families spent the day at the Zoo and did all the things you’ve ever imagined doing there before sleeping with the Hippos. Scouts got up close and personal with a couple of the zoo’s ambassador animals in a hands-on experience, but the fun didn’t stop there. Cubs discovered exactly what owls eat by exploring owl pellets, and even went on a flashlight tour – AT NIGHT!
“At night, we heard some great noises,” said Cubmaster Colby. “The flamingos let us know they were there, as did the capuchin monkeys (same as in Night at the Museum). The loudest sounds we heard were the Lions and Tigers. I had never really heard Lions roar in person, and there is a primal fear when you hear two lionesses and a male roar at night. I felt I needed a spear and a good cave!”
Oh, my! That would be memorable, for sure, as if sleeping inside the hippo exhibit wasn’t enough. Forget counting sheep, Cubmaster Colby said the Scouts fell asleep watching Timothy and his grandmother, Uma, come up for air every two-minutes as they snoozed underwater.
…Wait, little Timothy and his grandmother slept underwater?
No, silly! Timothy and Uma are Hippos at the zoo! That’s where the Scouts decided to bed down for the night. Because the Pack slept inside the hall, they didn’t need tents, just whatever they wanted to bring for a comfortable night. Some brought cots or sleeping pads, while others unrolled their sleeping bags and called it good.
“Sunday morning was the best though,” continued the Pack’s Cubmaster. “That is when the animals are fed and most active. The bush dogs decided not to wait for [breakfast] and caught a vulture to eat, while the [Pack’s] Lions, Tigers and Bears were out walking…the African wild dogs were running around and looking at the Scouts…”
The Pack watched elephants, zebras and giraffes eat breakfast while on a tour. The other animals didn’t seem to hide as much in the morning before the zoo opened.
“For 2021, we wanted somewhere closer and somewhere we could socially distance. One of our Lion Scout moms works for the zoo and let me know about the Roar and Snores program, and the committee voted this was the place to go. I am glad they did, because it was wonderful! It going to be a permanent fixture on our rotation schedule.”

It was a wonderful day at the park for 20 scouts and their families as we explored the Japanese Tea Gardens, observed golfers at The First Tea, leaned about the Polo Grounds, and walked along the shaded banks of the San Antonio River. It was a nice 2.1 mile hike that ended at the train depot. We hope to see you at our next hike!

Pack 102 helps out the Boerne community at this years Boerne Outdoor Family Fair. This event provides Kendall County families the opportunity to enjoy and learn about local services and organizations that are available in Boerne and surrounding areas. We helped the youth of our area tie knots and see some of the awesome outdoor activities we are a part of, such as our monthly hiking program, campouts, overnights, and summertime activities.
After being rained and snowed out, the THIRD time was the charm. Our group of intrepid scouts and families had a great time at Friedrich Wilderness Park as they hiked 3.5 miles along the unimproved trails. We had some discussion on first aid, the importance of hydration and what animals were seen along the trail.
Come join us this month for a fun day hiking Brackenridge Park, one of the most beautiful parks in San Antonio.
What a fantastic time hiking the Cibolo Creek Trail and then coming back along Old No. 9. We had 23 scouts and a TON of family and me-toos join us as we hiked across town for a total of 3.8 miles along Cibolo Creek and the Old No. 9 trail. Along the way, we checked out some of the wonderful art along the trail thanks to ART AL FRESCO, saw a lot of birds nest along the creek, discussed how trash gets washed into the creeks from the roads and neighborhoods and how we can help, and had a great time with our friends. Thanks to all that joined us and we hope to see you at Friedrich Park this Month.
Pack 102 took over part of Bear Creek Scout reservation October 16-18th as we enjoyed our Fall campout! Lions through the Thundering Eagle den enjoyed wonderful temperatures and nature as we hiked, fished, talked around the campfire and performed friendly service by clearing cedar and building trails. We were even invited to record our campfire for Council to use as part of their virtual campout the next weekend! Pack 102 has the most amazing scouts and families and we all had an awesome time! Check out the campfire on our Facebook page.
If you’ve never been part of scouting before, it can be difficult to catch up on all the terminology. Below is a short video answers the top five questions new parents had about Cub Scouting when they first joined and another on the benefits of Cub Scouting.
