The most important thing is to find comfortable shoes for your feet.

Find what is most comfortable and secure for you. Then think about how nice it looks.

Dance shoes are sports shoes, like your trainers (only nicer looking) and you will be spending a lot of time in them!

Injury is not an acceptable price to pay for style!

There are three or four major manufacturers in the UK:

(IDS, who also make their budget DANSport Basics range)

(who mainly specialise in latin shoes)

(who also have entry level styles but made to a high standard)

(they don't just make pointe shoes!)

Ballroom

Ladies wear flesh coloured satin court shoes. Heels vary in height and style.

Latin

Ladies wear sandals, usually tan satin. Heels vary in height and style.

Men wear black leather shoes with 1 inch heel. Preferably patent (shiny) for competitions.

Men wear specifically designed shoes with a 1.5 inch 'Latin' heel. Usually black leather.

Where to Try On

There are very few dance shops that stock Ballroom and Latin shoes. The nearest to Oxford with a good range is DuoDance in Herne Hill, London.

Alternatively, at any competition you go to, there will be a stall of one of the major manufacturers, where you can try on shoes before you buy them.
