Fake tanning is an important part of preparing for competitions. The lights on the dance floor are harsh so if you're not a golden brown glow, you will look like a zombie. Not attractive!
This is not a terrifying thing! You don't have to look like you've been tango-ed! And thankfully it's not that hard ^_^
Follow our advice and we promise you'll not look like you've been rolling around in the dirt.
Technique
The most important thing is to buy a self tanning glove! The soft absorbent side of the mitt will allow you to apply the tan evenly and without the dreaded streaks and splotches.
First, wash and exfoliate your skin to get rid of the dead skin cells. Fake tan doesn't 'fade', it drops off as our skin drops off and renews itself.
After applying the self-tan to your skin, rub the mitt over it in smooth, even circles until it's all absorbed.
They're very cheap (a few pounds) and available now from most drug stores (Boots etc)! You only need one as you can clean and reuse the mitt.
Remember also to shower before you dress! This will make your tan look lighter (you remove the top layer of unattached tan) but prevents the tan from staining your dress or costume and becoming impossible to wash off!

Flo GD recommends Fake Bake XtremeIt's wash off but if you don't wash it off its not that blotchy (small circular motion with glove) - and it goes a perfect deep brown dance tan colour. You can then wash off to a normal-life slightly tanned colour afterwards!
Its expensive but you only need 1 application so it lasts ages!
Amanda uses Bronze Ambition 'Fake Don't Bake' tanning creamIt's ridiculously cheap (like £2 a bottle)- I buy it from Body Care (which there isnt one in Oxford, but you can also buy it online for even cheaper!). I haven't had a problem with it yet, you've just got to make sure that you put in on evenly to reduce the risk of streaks. I find you have to do lots of layers (i usually use 1 bottle per comp- but seeing as its so cheap this doesnt really matter). It also dries really quickly and smells of pineapple! :)
Our coach Zoey uses just the simple Boots Soltan brand. You don't need to spend lots of money to get a good tan. As long as you follow the application technique guide for no streaks and apply generously.

This company does mail-order tan. It is compatible with air brush spray applicators if you have one but I have found it just as easy (if not easier to apply with a tanning mit you can get from a pharmacy).
I tend to do one application, leave at least 12 hours, wash off the bronzer, if I need to apply again lightly and leave it to develop again.
If you are using one of the tans with bronzer, ALWAYS shower off the bronzer before the competition, this protects your dress and stops you turning green (it does happen!). Happy tanning :-)
