Course Objectives
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this rotation, the student will be able to function at the level of an entering first-year
emergency medicine resident. Specifically, the student will be able to:
1) manage a single acutely ill patient amidst distractions, with guidance
2) independently recognize when an unstable patient requires immediate intervention
3) construct a differential diagnosis, prioritizing emergent conditions, based on chief complaint and
initial focused assessment
4) formulate a basic ED diagnostic and therapeutic plan
5) demonstrate caring, honest, and professional behavior when caring for a diverse group of
patients with acute medical issues
6) effectively communicate with patients and families in a busy ED setting
7) effectively communicate handoff information with colleagues, admitting teams and consultants
8) interpret significant laboratory results, imaging, and ECGs and their relevance to ED care
9) create a didactic presentation or online teaching tool on an EM topic with an EBM perspective
10) perform basic wound management including simple laceration repair
11) perform basic life support maneuvers including hemorrhage control, BVM ventilation, CPR,
and defibrillator placement
12) Describe indications and technique for endotracheal intubation, demonstrate effective BVM
ventilation and describe factors that complicate ventilation, place simple airway adjuncts
13) provide accurate and organized documentation (including a plan) for patients seen in the ED
14) describe the clinical manifestations, differential diagnosis and emergent management of:
• abdominal pain
• altered mental status
• cardiac arrest
• chest pain
• GI bleeding
• headache
• poisoning
• respiratory distress
• shock
• trauma
