July Sub-Interns
July Sub-Interns
My name is Khaqan Ahmad (pronounced like Pecan but with a K) and I am a Sub-Intern visiting from the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. I love the energy and camaraderie of the ED, which inspired me to pursue Emergency Medicine. My professional interests include Global Health, Social Medicine, Ultrasound, and Critical Care. Outside of the hospital, I enjoy basketball, reading classic novels, and house music.
My name is Michael Boutros and I am a Sub-Intern visiting from the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine. I find something new to love about emergency medicine every day and truly enjoy the full breadth of the field. Additionally, within EM, I am drawn to the administrative and operational side as well as sports medicine. On the administrative side, I am in the dual-degree MD/MBA program and co-founded a startup that uses AI to improve health literacy, currently being deployed at our institution's community free health fairs. On the sports medicine side, I am interested in expanding the role of EM physicians in sideline and event coverage, given the relevance of the skillset. Outside of the ED, I enjoy watching and playing sports, staying active, cooking, and traveling (I am actually writing this from the backseat on a highway in Croatia). New York is a city I know well and visit regularly, so I am especially glad to be rotating here and learning from your residents and faculty.
My name is Esin, and I am a visiting Sub-Intern from FAU Schmidt College of Medicine. My interest in Emergency Medicine began when I worked as a medical scribe, and no other specialty has made me as happy or excited as EM. I am also highly interested in advocacy and hope to pursue a JD degree after residency so that I can more effectively advocate for patients, residents, and our field. Non-physician professionals and large corporations have been influencing the future of our profession for far too long.
Outside of medicine, I have worked at my parents' restaurant for over 10 years, which inspired my love of cooking. I enjoy trying international recipes and learning new culinary skills. Having had the opportunity to live in both California and Florida, I also love playing beach volleyball with friends and classmates in my free time. Until Spirit Airlines' bankruptcy, I would often take a cheap day trip flight once a month just to explore a new city. This summer, I will be driving from California to New York City with my German shepherd, Hodor. I am excited to meet and work with everyone and to gain more exposure to EM at a large, busy medical center in the greatest city in the world.
My name is Callan and I am a Sub-Intern visiting from Rush Medical College in Chicago, originally from San Francisco. Within EM, I’m interested in ultrasound, toxicology, and health equity. Outside the hospital you can find me trying new recipes or restaurants, biking around town, whitewater rafting, or working on my stand-up tight five.
My name is Sarah Mabee and I am a Sub-Intern visiting from SHSU COM. I am interested in emergency medicine, wilderness medicine, and medical education. I grew up in Perth, Western Australia before moving the United States as a teenager. Before medical school, I completed the northern half of the Pacific Crest Trail and have always enjoyed outdoor adventures and endurance challenges! Additionally, I enjoy playing piano, tennis/pickleball, and creating art. I love meeting new people and hearing their stories, which is one of the reasons I was drawn to emergency medicine. I'm very excited to learn from the team this month!
My name is Daniel and I am a Sub-Intern visiting from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. I am applying to Emergency Medicine in the upcoming residency cycle and am particularly interested in administration, toxicology, and EMS. I was a history major in undergrad and I hope to explore the intersection of medicine and the humanities throughout residency and my career. Prior to medical school, I volunteered as an EMT for my hometown ambulance service and worked as an ER Tech in a busy Level 1 Trauma Center. In my free time I enjoy going to the gym, playing tennis, traveling, and trying new restaurants with friends. I am looking forward to getting to know everyone at NYP and exploring the city this summer!
My name is Catherine Raquel and I am a Sub-Intern visiting from the University of Illinois Chicago College of Medicine.
I am pursuing a career in Emergency Medicine and am particularly interested in trauma, global health, and sports medicine. Before medical school, I played Division I beach volleyball at Stanford, and I think my love of fast-paced, team-oriented environments is a big part of what drew me to EM. I also helped co-found Feed2Succeed, a nonprofit that works to address childhood malnutrition in the Philippines, which has shaped my interest in global health and service.
Outside of medicine, I love being active and can usually be found on a volleyball court, tennis court, hiking trail, or climbing wall. I'm also an avid traveler, amateur photographer, dedicated foodie, and unapologetic musical theater fan. One of the things I'm most excited about this month is exploring New York City's food scene and checking a few Broadway shows off my bucket list. I'm looking forward to learning from the residents and faculty at NewYork-Presbyterian, meeting my fellow sub-interns, and making the most of my time in the city.
My name is Akina Sanyang, and I am a sub-intern from Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, originally from Atlanta, GA. I am applying into Emergency Medicine and am especially interested in medical education and narrative medicine, including how we teach teamwork, clinical reasoning, and patient-centered care in fast-moving environments.
Outside of medicine, I enjoy creative nonfiction writing, dance, trying new recipes, and finding new ways to keep my plants alive. I’m excited to learn from the Columbia/ Cornell EM residents and faculty, contribute to the team, strengthen my procedural skills, and continue developing my clinical judgment throughout the rotation.
My name is Michelle Stratford, I am one of the fourth year medical students at NYMC starting my Sub-I in July, below is my photo, and my biographical blurb. Thank you all!

I’m drawn to EM because I enjoy working with patients from all backgrounds and walks of life. Outside of the hospital I enjoy road biking, rowing, running, traveling off the beaten path, and wood working. I’m looking forward to meeting everyone and learning in a new clinical environment and community.
