work - Old English weorc "something done, discreet act performed by someone, products of labor, opportunity of expending labor in some useful or remunerative way"
Wednesday at Northfield is a day students would never experience in most secondary schools.
Students put aside their books and papers for awhile to put their knowledge and energies to work. They are assigned a task they can manage ... and then encouraged and guided in completing it ... whether it’s clerking for a consignment shop, weeding for a rescue mission or helping to build a house for those who could not otherwise afford to buy one.
Students also perform work for the school ... a privilege precious few outside our walls ever have. Not only do they clean and order the building and rooms, they also work on the grounds and even in a neighborhood garden we share with the community around the school. They have created murals, glass-tile mosaics, quilts, and benches to make Northfield a more beautiful and comfortable place.
