“You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
― Jesus of Nazareth
As application must follow instruction, so service must follow knowledge or else learning has been in vain. Humbling oneself is, perhaps, one of the hardest lessons in life ... especially in the Western world where "nobody else has to do it". But, of course, service is the only path to greatness in God's eyes ... and so, in this world of arrogant men, there is one lesson we must be sure all of our students get before they go:
You will kneel ... sooner or later ... so learn to do it willingly ... and gladly.
It is for this reason that we stress service ... it's the best way to test our student's understanding of what Cardinal Newman called the "one definite meaning" which unites all subject-matter ... love ... something taught only by example ... and learned only by service.
