"Lost in Transition: Human Trafficking and Migrations in Myanmar", 17 mars 2016, Hart House Debates Room, 7 Hart House Circle, Toronto ON.
Organisée par BORDERLESS, une ONG de secours aux personnes déplacées et aux réfugiés.
Millions of Burmese civilians fall through the cracks as Myanmar slowly puts its conflict-ridden past behind it and moves into political and economic reforms. Whether they are displaced by violence or persecution, or are attracted to employment opportunities abroad, Burmese migrants face dangerous conditions and human rights abuses as they are trafficked around the region or work in exploitative environments. BORDERLESS presents three speakers who will shine light on this massive population upheaval that is overlooked by the world.
Speakers:
- Antonela Arhin, Executive Officer of Center for Diaspora and Transnational Studies, University of Toronto
- Nora Rowley, Human Rights Advocate for Rohingya Muslims of Myanmar
- Stephen Campbell, Post-Doctoral Fellow, Trent University
Moderator:
- Emile Dirks, PhD student in Political Science, University of Toronto

"The Heritage of Ancient and Urban Sites: Giving Voice to Local Priorities", 14-15 mars, Nalanda-Sriwijaya Centre
The workshop brings together heritage professionals, policymakers and grassroots organisations from six countries: Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore and Thailand. Speakers present their work with local, regional and global communities in voicing local priorities at ancient and urban heritage sites. Each country is at a critical juncture in relation to public awareness and commitment on issues of cultural heritage.
Discussion of ancient and urban sites in local, transborder and international contexts can highlight commonalities and differences in defining and effecting greater community participation. Speakers will present local experiences and expertise in an open and non-prescriptive manner. Selected papers will be published.

"Imagining Asia(s): Networks, Actors, Sites", 10–11 October 2016, ISEAS–Yusof Ishak Institute, Singapore
Long perceived as a clearly defined geographical continent to the east of Europe, Asia has been conceptualised in more recent scholarship as a cultural entity produced through geographical imaginations located in specific historical contexts. Meanwhile Area Studies scholarship has divided the field of Asian Studies into seemingly self-contained units of West and Central Asia, South and Southeast Asia, and East Asia. These regional configurations speak more about the changing geopolitical and economic interests in these areas rather than the historical or cultural roots of such demarcations. Following the lead of recent scholarly critiques of these demarcations, this conference seeks to explore Asian societies and identities as interconnected formations through trajectories/networks of circulation of people, ideas, and objects in the longue durée. Moving beyond the divides of old Area Studies scholarship and the arbitrary borders set by late colonial empires and the rise of post-colonial nation states, this conference seeks to map critically the configuration of contact zones in which mobile bodies, minds, and cultures interact to foster new images, identities, and imaginations of Asia.

Gatty Lecture, "Art of the Self: The Ethico-Aesthetics of Balinese Pepaosan Performance" par Nicole Reisnour (doctorante du SEAP dans le département de musique de l’Université de Cornell), 10 mars 2016, Kahin Center, Cornell University.
"The art of pepaosan, an Indonesian tradition of singing and interpreting religious texts, is widely represented in Bali as a Hindu form of ethical self-cultivation focused on the pursuit of divine guidance. However, while state programs to develop this art form promote an understanding of virtue that foregrounds interiority and personal responsibility, many pepaosan practitioners pursue a relational form of virtue—at once material and immaterial, aesthetic and ethical—which is the product of both human and divine agency. This talk explores how this single musical practice is incorporated into two divergent ethical projects, which render inhabitable two distinct constructions of devout Hindu selfhood."

"The seals of Sultan Ahmad al-Salih of Bone", 4 mars 2016, Asian and African studies blog (British Library)
"Last year the British Library digitised the personal diary of Sultan Ahmad al-Salih Shamsuddin, 22nd sultan of the kingdom of Bone in south Sulawesi, who reigned from 1775 until his death in July 1812. The diary (Add. 12354), written in the king’s own hand in Bugis language and script, is an extremely important historical source for Bone. Daily entries cover a wide range of subjects from political events and religious ceremonies to notable visitors, births, deaths and marriages in the royal family, and even unusual weather patterns, as revealed in the doctoral study of this diary by Rahilah Omar (2003)…"

"Manila: Beyond the Envelope": 4 American Filipino artists on transnational identity in ArtRadar
"The exhibition is a cacophony of perspectives of the city of Manila. In describing the show, artist Marcius Noceda realised that the exhibition itself was indicative of the surreal, confusing and chaotic experience that is quintessentially Manila. He states that the exhibition is like going to Manila in a visual way: it is cramped, noisy, chaotic and divided. But within this confusion, there is a calm delirious and addictive excitement. He says that “If you go to Manila [and the exhibition] you are on acid.” Through the four artists’ work, it is clear that reconciling Manila is not an easy task, but it is one for them filled with pleasure and pain."
