2016 Season Schedule

posted Apr 18, 2016, 3:29 PM by Alan Silken   [ updated Apr 18, 2016, 3:57 PM ]

Here is the 2016 Season Schedule.

As discussed at the annual meeting, this fills in gaps in the schedule with a few races we will run ourselves.

  •  There will be three (3) separate racing series, with awards for each Series and for the overall Season. There will also be a Cruise in August.
  •  Cox Sprague Scoring for all Series.
  •  Participation required: 60% for each series, 50% for season, but to qualify for season, must sail 60% of Fall races.  Same throw out regime as in the past. [ie. 20% of races may be discarded as long as yacht meets qualifying requirements.]
  •  Scoring will be based on boat, as usual, not skipper, but to encourage new people to participate in class, any boat owner can designate any race (in advance) as not counting for boat’s scoring (or participation) when sailed by another person.  Idea is to keep boats sailing and get more people out there to try S class racing.
  •  To encourage participation early and late (and long), remember that the Bello Trophy will be presented for best overall performance in first race, last race and long distance race.
  •  We thought about trying to take the Class around the Bay on some of the additional weekends, but for this first year elected to keep this simple and sail out of Newport where we have best chance of getting participation and where we can line up consistent race committee support and places to gather if we want to after the races.
  •  Except for the last weekend of the year in September (Boat Show weekend, September 17-18 when we will try to show off the Class by sailing in Newport harbor area) all of our own races will start north of the Newport Bridge at 1 pm.
  •  The S Class Invitational on August 6-7 will be a focus for our summer and a way for us to promote the class – this weekend will include the Six Meters and any other classic one designs who want to participate.   We plan to have a barbeque or pot luck supper that night at the Newport Yacht Club.
  •  A lot of this is a bit of an experiment, and in that spirit we have scheduled two of our own weekends as Saturday only.   Some of us have difficulty telling family we are going sailing for both days on a weekend, and we thought trying this approach was worthwhile.  This also lets those who might otherwise be away one of these two weekend have a chance to sail at least one day.  Since we are running things ourselves, we should be able to do two or three races in an afternoon.
  •  Fred is planning on going to the Opera House Cup as several of us (including Fred) have done in the past (and may do again) and we are hoping to encourage others to join him.
  •  To do this, we have reinstituted the traditional (non-scoring) long distance race, but shifted from Block Island to Cuttyhunk.   Date for this is Saturday August 13, with possible racing with the Quisset Fleet the next day, and a cruise to Quisset, the Vineyard and Nantucket in time for the Opera House Cup on Sunday August 21.   If we have even two or three boats, this would be awesome and there would be a good chance of having powerboat or auxiliary company for us.
  •  Race back from Herreshoff Museum to Newport on Sunday August 28 will also be non-scoring.

Comments and suggestions welcomed, and this is still subject to change, but to some extent we are going to need to exercise the mandate provided at the annual meeting and just make arbitrary decisions that undoubtedly will not make everyone happy.

Having said all that, we doubt there is another one design class anywhere that can offer a schedule like this for our level of consistently great sailing and highly competitive racing.
