Lunar eclipses occurring near the Moon's descending node are given odd saros series numbers. May 17, 2017 - 115th Anniversary of the Antikythera Mechanism's Discovery

On this date in 1902, Greek archaeologist Valerios Stais sifted through some artifacts from a shipwreck at Antikythera. The wrecked Roman cargo ship was discovered two years earlier, but Stais was the first to notice an intriguing bit of bronze among the treasures. It looked like it might be a gear or wheel. That corroded chunk of metal turned out to be part of the Antikythera Mechanism, an ancient analog astronomical computer.

The Antikythera Mechanism tracked planetary positions, predicted lunar and solar eclipses, and even signaled the next Olympic Games. It was probably also used for mapping and navigation. A dial on the front combines zodiacal and solar calendars, while dials on the back capture celestial cycles. Computer models based on 3-D tomography have revealed more than 30 sophisticated gears, housed in a wooden and bronze case the size of a shoebox.  

The mechanism was initially dated around 85 BC, but recent studies suggest it may be even older (circa 150 BC). The crank-powered device was way ahead of its time -- its components are as intricate as those of some 18th-century clocks.  

Historians continue to ponder the Antikythera Mechanism's purpose and inner workings, and visitors to the National Archaeological Museum of Greece marvel at its delicate complexity. Today's Doodle illustrates how a rusty remnant can open up a skyful of knowledge and inspiration.

It is a device of absolute genius, it is quite extraordinary, It is a beautiful mathematical way of doing it, quite unbelievable, the person who designed this was a genius of the highest order in my view, it is quite extraordinary. And its such a unique object, its such a, its so important, its just an absolutely critical object to whole understanding of the history of science and technology.

Its the first known calculating machine in history. There is nothing comparatable to it known, anywhere in the world, for another thousand years.

The great scientist and science fiction writer Arthrur C. Clarke said that, If the Greeks had recognised what they'd invented in a sense,  If they had the imagination to understand the power of this technology, They could have got to the Moon within three hundred years.

In his famous research paper 'Gears From The Greeks" historian Derec De Solla Price put forward a stunning theory regarding the device known as the Antikythera Mechanism. That the origins of our modern day engineering achievements, what he called our "recent age of High Technology", could be found in this ancient device. He theorised that the profession of clock and instrument making had acted as a silent "carrier" of a larger, and much older technology tradition.

Embedded in the daily output of clockmakers, were the fundamental elements of meodern engineering, such as gearing, linkages, shafts and bearings. Some of the key elements that had led to The Scientific and Industrial Revolutions, and then everything that had followed. Clockmakers, he said, had played a crucial role in the emergence of our modern world, and that the clockmaking tradition itself, was part of a distinguished main line of technology that could be directly traced all of the way back to the Antikythera Mechanism. The Ancient Greeks had written the original language of the mechanical engineer, and had left a record of it in this incredible device. A calculating machine, that used complex mathematics and precise engineering to model the Ancient Greek understanding of the Cosmos. A single input wheel drove a complex combination of grears, pins, slots, and pointers, so that the operator could directly compute and most importantly predict, the position of the naked eye celestial objects, the date and time of eclipses, and even some of the characteristics of those eclipses. The phase of the Moon, retrograde motion of the planets,  and even barely observable details like the precession of the lunar orbit, were all modelled according the Ancient Greek astronomical theory. For our understanding of the history of science and tehcnology, it is likely to be the single most important object that has ever been uncovered from ancient times.
