Antikythera Mechanism Aegis

Αncient Greece

Published on Jan 1, 2018

The Antikythera Mechanism is an ancient craftsman, which functioned as an analogue, mechanical computer and instrument of astronomical observations and is similar to a complex clock mechanism.

The Antikythera Mechanism is the oldest surviving machine with gears and, in fact, of a particularly complex planetary function.

In short, the Antikythera Mechanism was a machine designed to predict celestial phenomena according to the sophisticated astronomical theories of its time.

Antikythera Youth

Faces of Ancient Europe

Published on Apr 18, 2018

The Antikythera Ephebe or Antikythera Youth, is a bronze statue of a young man of languorous grace that was found in 1900 by sponge-divers in the area of the ancient Antikythera shipwreck off the island of Antikythera, Greece. It was the first of the series of Greek bronze sculptures that the Aegean and Mediterranean yielded up in the twentieth century. The wreck site, which is dated about 70–60 BC, also yielded the Antikythera Mechanism, an astronomical calculating device, a characterful head of a Stoic philosopher, and a hoard of coins. The coins included a disproportionate quantity of Pergamene cistophoric tetradrachms and Ephesian coins, leading scholars to surmise that it had begun its journey on the Ionian coast, perhaps at Ephesus; none of its recovered cargo has been identified as from mainland Greece.

The Ephebe, which measures 1.96 meters slightly over lifesize, was retrieved in numerous fragments. Its first restoration was revised in the 1950s, under the direction of Christos Karouzos, changing the focus of the eyes, the configuration of the abdomen, the connection between the torso and the right upper thigh and the position of the right arm; the re-restoration is universally considered a success.

The Ephebe does not correspond to any familiar iconographic model, and there are no known copies of the type. He held a spherical object in his right hand, and possibly may have represented Paris presenting the Apple of Discord to Aphrodite; however, since Paris is consistently depicted cloaked and with the distinctive Phrygian cap, other scholars have suggested a beardless, youthful Heracles with the Apple of the Hesperides. It has also been suggested that the youth is a depiction of Perseus holding the head of the slain Gorgon. It could also be the God Apollo, a "Learned" Hermes holding a caduceus and declaiming, an athlete holding some sort of prize (a spherical lekythion), or a sphere, a wreathe, a phiale, or an apple. The statue could even be the funerary statue of a young man.

The statue, dated to about 340-330 BC, is one of the most brilliant products of Peloponnesian bronze sculpture; the individuality and character it displays have encouraged speculation on its possible sculptor. It is, perhaps, the work of the famous sculptor Euphranor, trained in the Polyclitan tradition, who did make a sculpture of Paris, according to Pliny:

By Euphranor is an Alexander [Paris]. This work is specially admired, because the eye can detect in it at once the judge of the goddesses, the lover of Helen, and yet the slayer of Achilles.

The Antikythera Youth is conserved in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens.

The Antikythera Mechanism: decoding an astonishing 2000 years old astronomical computer

Institut d'Astrophysique de Paris

Published on Apr 16, 2018

IAP weekly specialised seminars / Friday 13 April 2018

John Seiradakis (Dept. Astroph., Aristotle Univ. Thessaloniki)

Invited by: Michel Dennefeld and Pierre Guillard

A lecture that attempts to explain the functional details, the operation and the purpose of use of an ancient astronomical mechanism, built about 2000 ago. The Antikythera Mechanism was found by chance, in a shipwreck, close to the small Greek island of Antikythera, in April 1900, by sponge divers. The shipwreck was dated between 86 and 67 BCE (coins from Pergamon). Later the Mechanism was stylistically dated, around the second half of the 2nd century B.C. (200 – 100 BCE). It was a portable (laptop-size), geared mechanism which calculated and displayed, with good precision, the movement of the Sun and the Moon on the sky and the phase of the Moon for a given epoch. It could also calculate the dates of the four-year cycle of the Olympic Games and predict eclipses! Its 30, precisely cut, gears were driven by a manifold, with which the user could select, with the help of a pointer, any particular epoch. While doing so, several pointers were synchronously driven by the gears, to show the above mentioned celestial phenomena on several accurately marked spiral dials. It contained an extensive user’s manual. The exact function of the gears has finally been decoded and a large portion of the manual has been read after 2000 years by a major new investigation, using state of the art equipment. New astronomical results will be discussed, the construction of the spirals and the pointers will be presented and the ability of ancient Greeks to use hard metals and cutting tools will be examined.

The most ancient Computer Antikythera Mechanism

Greek Orthodox Vlogger

Published on Apr 25, 2018

The Antikythera Mechanism is the oldest known complex mechanism. It is also called the first known analog computer. Its manufacturing quality suggests it was discovered during the Hellenistic Period. It was discovered in a wreck off the Greek island of Antikythira between Kythira and Crete. Based on the form of the Greek inscriptions it carries dates back to 150 BC. and 100 BC. The mechanism also includes an astrological calendar, whose pointers appear to revolve around the zodiac, revealing both moon and planetary motions. They are also associated with sporting events taking place every four years, such as the Olympic Games and Isthmia.

History of Astronomy Part 3: Copernicus and Heliocentrism

Professor Dave Explains

Published on Oct 17, 2018

Once it was determined that the Earth is round, the next step was to decipher the geometry of the solar system. Does everything rotate around the Earth, like in the geocentric model of Ptolemy? We thought so for thousands of years, but that all changed when Copernicus came along. He suggested that everything revolves around the sun instead, proposing a new heliocentric model. This was the single biggest paradigm shift in the history of astronomy, and also one of the most significant moments in the history of science. Or even in the history of mankind! Let's check out the details.

History of Astronomy Part 4: Kepler's Laws and Beyond

Professor Dave Explains

Published on Oct 25, 2018

The heliocentric model of Copernicus was extremely controversial in its time, but it wasn't the end of the story. Johannes Kepler used the data of his boss, Tycho Brahe, to further corroborate it, but also show that the planets do not move on circular orbits, they move on elliptical orbits. This ended up being the first of his three laws regarding planetary motion. This set the stage for incredible work by giants like Galileo and Newton, so let's check out this chapter of the story!

Every now and then an artifact is discovered that has historians rewriting the history of human civilization. Some of these artifacts have us questioning how advanced some civilizations were and in some cases confounded the experts because these objects appear to be in advance of anything that had existed in that period. So questions are then asked, where did they get the knowledge from to create these objects. Sometimes this advanced technology was lost when that particular civilization came to an end, for whatever reason, and become lost or buried over time. Then after hundreds or even thousands of years later are rediscovered. One such artifact lost to time is called The Antytikara Mechanism that was discovered in a Roman Shipwreck in 1902. Let's delve a bit deeper into the origins of this incredible mechanism that appeared ahead of its time.

The Most Mysterious Out of Place Device in the World

Dark Docs

Published on Dec 10, 2018

The zodiac discovery: In 2012, a dive team performed a thorough search of an ancient shipwreck off the coast of a small Greek island called Antikythera. The shipwreck had been discovered over 100 years earlier, but these divers were on the lookout for anything that had been left behind.

The team found hundreds of previously undiscovered treasures, including pottery, statues, and a sarcophagus lid. But perhaps their most intriguing discovery was found lying on the seafloor near the wreck: a rusted bronze disk, about 3 inches across. The divers brought the disk back with them, cleaned it, and performed a close examination with x-rays. They found that the surface of the disk contained the traces of what was an engraving - a drawing of a bull, the zodiac sign of Taurus.

Researchers now believe this disk will prove to be a crucial clue in unlocking the true purpose of the Antikythera Mechanism - a mysterious artifact discovered by the original dive crew. Long considered to be one of the most sophisticated and unexplained ancient items in the world, the Antikythera Mechanism may now be closer than ever to giving up its last remaining secrets.

The World's First Computer. The Antikythera Mechanism

Long before modern-day civilisations, recent discoveries from the ancient world keep coming up and they never cease to amaze us. The early Greek achievements, from the ancient times in arts, philosophy, mathematics, and astronomy are some of the finest, among other accomplishments, in the ancient western world antiquity.

However, there's more to it. Long before Microsoft, or Apple, the ancient Greeks had also invented the world’s first analogue computer, recognized by science today. As astonishing as it this may sound, here’s the story.

2,000 years ago, off the Greek island of Antikythera a ship loaded with luxury goods en route to Rome sunk to the seabed when it was hit by a storm, it is thought and all of its treasures were lost for two millennia.

The shipwreck was found near the island of Antikythera, between the Peloponnese and Crete, in 1,901 by a Greek sponge diver and an unbelievable discovery was made. An ancient computer was found dating between 150 and 100 BC.

The world’s oldest analogue computer, and since then it has become known, as the Antikythera mechanism. Different coins and other artifacts were also found on the shipwreck dating between 70 BC and 60 BC.

This device is the most complex device known in Antiquity. According to archeologists, only in the 14th century did people again have the knowledge to build similar devices.

Since then, two more diving expeditions for artifacts at the Antikythera shipwreck site were undertaken. One in 2012 and one in 2015, and these additional searches have yielded a number of other fascinating art objects.

Archaeologists have discovered more intriguing artifacts from the Greek shipwreck, which has become famous for carrying the "ancient computer."

The site represents, what one of the team's co-leaders reports, the largest known cache of shipwreck cargo in the Mediterranean. In addition to the Antikythera mechanism, which was designed to calculate dates and predict astronomical phenomena, the ship also carried coins, pottery items and bronze statues.

An additional bronze artifact that was discovered is a disc decorated with the figure of a bull. However, the function of this piece still remains a mystery today.

The Antikythera mechanism was a mechanical calculator, and a mechanical model of the Solar System, and scientists today believe that it was the first analogue computer in the world. It was so technologically advanced that nothing could surpass it for nearly 1,500 years!

The device, was housed in the remains of a 34 cm × 18 cm × 9 cm wooden box, and it was found as one lump at the bottom of the Aegean sea.

However, in the process of handling it, it broke into three main fragments which have then been divided into 82 separate fragments after conservation works. Four of these fragments contain gears, and the largest gear is approximately 14 centimeters in diameter, and originally had 223 teeth.

A number of gears worked together, much like they do in a mechanical clock. The device could predict astronomical positions, eclipses, the motions of the sun, the moon and probably some of the planets. This makes it also possible to use the device as a calendar.

There were three big dials, and three small ones. The Antikythera mechanism has different functions. It could be used as solar calendar showing days and months, as well as the Babylonian zodiac. It could be used as a Lunisolar calendar showing the various months. It could be used as a calendar showing the various eclipse cycles such as past and future eclipses of the sun and the moon. It could also be used as a calendar showing the years and the months that the Olympic games were due.

The device is now on display in the Bronze Collection of the National Archaeological Museum of Athens.

This ancient computer is now widely acknowledged as the most important archaeological discovery ever found. It was used by the ancient Greeks to identify the astrological positions of the stars and the sun and the moon.

Antikythera Mechanism. A Shocking Discovery from Ancient Greece. First ever computer in the world!

Weird Facts

Antikythera Mechanism. A Shocking Discovery from Ancient Greece. First ever computer in the world!

The Antikythera mechanism was retrieved from 45 metres (148 ft) of water in the Antikythera shipwreck off Point Glyphadia on the Greek island of Antikythera in 1901, most probably in July of that year.[25] The wreck had been found in April 1900 by a group of Greek sponge divers who retrieved numerous large artefacts, including bronze and marble statues, pottery, unique glassware, jewellery, coins, and the mechanism. All were transferred to the National Museum of Archaeology in Athens for storage and analysis. The mechanism was merely a lump of corroded bronze and wood at the time and went unnoticed for two years, while museum staff worked on piecing together more obvious statues.

On 17 May 1902, archaeologist Valerios Stais found that one of the pieces of rock had a gear wheel embedded in it. He initially believed that it was an astronomical clock, but most scholars considered the device to be prochronistic, too complex to have been constructed during the same period as the other pieces that had been discovered. Investigations into the object were dropped until British science historian and Yale University professor Derek J. de Solla Price became interested in it in 1951. In 1971, Price and Greek nuclear physicist Charalampos Karakalos made X-ray and gamma-ray images of the 82 fragments. Price published an extensive 70-page paper on their findings in 1974.

It is not known how the mechanism came to be on the cargo ship, but it has been suggested that it was being taken from Rhodes to Rome, together with other looted treasure, to support a triumphal parade being staged by Julius Caesar.

The Antikythera Mechanism is an ancient Greek mechanical device found to have been used to calculate the position of celestial bodies, namely the sun, the moon, the 5 known planets at the time, eclipses, and other celestial cycles, circulating in association with the Greek Zodiac circle and the Egyptian calendar. It’s the culmination of over 80 fragments discovered in 1901 in a shipwreck off the coast of Antikythera, Greece, which included numerous bronze gears with finely tuned teeth, plus dials and even writings indicating to it’s primary function.

Hublot MP-08 Neo Antikythera SunMoon Automatic Watch | The Watch Collector

The Watch Collector

Published on Jun 2, 2019

This watch is an amazing example of the sweet mix of history, art and science. The story behind the creation is very exiting to know and this is of course in addition to the very eye-catching look, complex design, beautiful layered 3D dial, built quality and cutting edge modern automatic movement.

More than 21 centuries ago, a mechanism of fabulous ingenuity was created in Greece, a device capable of indicating exactly how the sky would look for decades to come -- the position of the moon and sun, lunar phases and even eclipses. But this incredible invention would be drowned in the sea and its secret forgotten for two thousand years.

This device is known as the Antikythera Mechanism, or the world's "first computer". The fragments of the Mechanism were discovered in 1901 by sponge divers near the island of Antikythera. It is kept since then at the National Archaeological Museum in Athens, Greece.

For more than a century, researchers were trying to understand its functions. Since 2005, a pluridisciplinary research team, the "Antikythera Mechanism Research Project", is studying the Mechanism with the latest high tech available.

The results of this ongoing research has enabled the construction of many models. Amongst them, the unique mechanism of a watch, designed by Hublot as a tribute to the Mechanism, is incorporating the known functions of this mysterious and fascinating ancient Mechanism.

A model of the Antikythera Mechanism, built by the Aristotle University in Greece, together with the mechanism of the watch and this film in 3D are featuring in an exhibition about the Mechanism that is taking place in Paris, at the Musée des Arts et Métiers.

The original fragments of the Mechanism, its main models and the watch designed by Hublot are on display at the National Archaeological Museum in Athens, Greece.

Today we will talk about the antikythera mechanism. This is a very unique type of brass object. There are deep secrets inside it. It was discovered in Greek Island antikythera 1901. And is considered the world's first analogue computer. Who followed the Lunar calendar and gave information about changing weather. This instrument can accurately measure the directions of planets in the universe. This instrument is divided into 82 pseces and is a complex clock mechanism. Which is made of brass gear and can predict all things accurately. Surprising thing is that no one has yet to know the inventors of this device. And everyone is wondering where such technology should have come from earlier times. All parts are still kept in the National Archaeological Museum Athens.

Antikythera, a rock in the sea.

Tzeli Hadjidimitriou Photographer

Published on Jan 19, 2015

This video is about the isolated island of Antikythera, in the middle of the sea, where men live their lives alone, without women or families, as there is no school or doctor, or any kind of comfort that could keep them in their land. Land itself is not generous, exposed to strong winds and the salt that covers everything. They are lucky when the ship can park and bring them bread and dry food from Crete. Only in August, families and expatriates come back to celebrate in the monastery of Agios Mammas and be together again.
