Antikythera wreck-Antikythera mechanism
Adventure Story
Published on Mar 17, 2015
Info:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antikyth...
The Antikythera wreck is a shipwreck dating from the 2nd quarter of the 1st century BC.[1] It was discovered by sponge divers off Point Glyphadia on the Greek island of Antikythera in 1900.
The wreck yielded numerous statues, coins and other artifacts dating back to the 4th century BC, as well as the severely corroded remnants of a device many regard as the world's oldest known analog computer, the Antikythera mechanism
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antikyth...
The Antikythera mechanism (/ˌæntɨkɨˈθɪərə/ ant-i-ki-theer-ə or /ˌæntɨˈkɪθərə/ ant-i-kith-ə-rə) is an ancient analog computer[1][2][3][4] designed to predict astronomical positions and eclipses for calendrical and astrological purposes,[5][6][7] as well as the cycles of Olympic Games.[8]
Found housed in a 340 × 180 × 90 mm wooden box, the device is a complex clockwork mechanism composed of at least 30 meshing bronze gears. Its remains were found as 82 separate fragments, of which only seven contain any gears or significant inscriptions.[9][10] The largest gear [clearly visible in Fragment A at right] is approximately 140 mm in diameter and originally had 223 teeth.
The artifact was recovered in 1900–1901 from the Antikythera shipwreck off the Greek island of Antikythera.[11] Believed to have been designed and constructed by Greek scientists, the instrument has been dated either between 150 to 100 BCE,[5] or, according to a more recent view, at 205 BCE.[12][13]
After the knowledge of this technology was lost at some point in Antiquity, technological artifacts approaching its complexity and workmanship did not appear again in Europe until the development of mechanical astronomical clocks in the fourteenth century.[14]
All known fragments of the Antikythera mechanism are kept at the National Archaeological Museum of Athens.

Under 45 metres of water, just off the Greek Island of Antikythera is an Ancient Greek shipwreck, discovered within the sunken ship was the Antikuthera Mechanism. A mechanism that is thought to of been used to calculate astronomical positions. However this ancient calculator is very significant due to the fact that it's as complex as an 18th century top-notch clock, yet was built between 150 to 100 BCE. It's an ancient analog computer that consists of a box with dials on the outside and a very complex assembly of about 30 bronze gear wheels mounted inside, nothing similar to this has ever been discovered or is mentioned in any known writings from the period of its creation. The reason that this mechanism is so mysterious is that it can predict astronomical positions and eclipses for calendrical and astrological purposes, as well as the cycles of Olympic Games. It was built with extreme precision and care, and after the knowledge of this technology was lost at some point in Antiquity, technological artifacts approaching its complexity and workmanship did not appear again in Europe until the development of mechanical astronomical clocks in the fourteenth century. Observers of the artifact have said that is is jaw dropping how complex it is considering it is from the Ancient Greek period. Others have said that it is more valuable than the Mona Lisa! So how did these ancient scientists build a mechanism so complex? And why was the technology lost until the 14 century? Let me know what you think in the comments section below and stay tuned for the next video in the unexplained ancient artifact season.

Secrets of the Antikythera Mechanism: Session 1
ComputerHistory

[Recorded: May 13, 2015]
In 1900, sponge divers off the coast of the tiny Greek island of Antikythera made an astonishing discovery: the wreck of an ancient Roman ship lay 200 feet beneath the water, its dazzling cargo spread out over the ocean floor. Among the life-size statues and amphorae was an encrusted piece of metal, which after nearly a century of investigation, is finally revealing its secrets. Called the Antikythera Mechanism, study has shown that this improbably preserved object is actually an ancient Greek astronomical computer of a technical sophistication not seen until the clock making traditions of Medieval Europe—1,500 years after the Mechanism is believed to have been made (about 200 BC).Recent advances in computer imaging as well as painstaking scholarship have finally elucidated nearly all details of the Mechanism.
Join us as we dive into the mysterious history of the Antikythera Mechanism, guided by several world experts: Jonathan Knowles, from Autodesk, discusses the use of digital tools to recreate historical objects; Michael Wright, former curator of mechanical engineering at the Science Museum in London, describes the structure and recreation of the Mechanism at University College London and brought a model of the device to the Museum for audience members to explore; professor Nicolaos Alexopoulos presents on the sociology, engineering, and science of ancient Greece; marine archaeologist Brendan Foley describes his 2014 diving expedition to the original Antikythera wreck site; and, finally, Tatjana Dzambazova will discuss her projects at Autodesk for the digital preservation and dissemination of cultural heritage. The host of this event is Museum Trustee Michael Hawley.

Youth from Antikythera
This is one of the finest large cast bronze sculptures of the Hellenistic period. It has been restored almost to its entirety from fragments found in a 1st century BC shipwreck. The naked youth stands firmly on his left leg, as his right leg relaxes to the side and back giving his body the sense of muscular tension. The right arm hangs casually by his side, while the raised left hand held an object, which is now missing. This statue most probably represents Paris holding the apple of Eris. Other interpretations are Perseus holding Medusa's head, or an athlete holding a ball. The figure's structure, harmony of movement and rendering of the muscles show the influence of the Polykleitian 'cannon', but this youth's body is rounder and more athletic than those of Polykleitos. It is attributed to a Peloponnesian workshop and could be the work of Euphranor from Corinthian Sicyon.

After his talk, and during a lunch break in the entire proceedings, he gave an impromptu demonstration of his replica of the mechanism. He demonstrated how it worked, and then disassembled and reassembled it, all the while answering questions from the crowd.
I took this video with my phone, kneeling in front of the table, while Michael showed off his amazing device. Michael and I would like to make clear this was not a planned demonstration video, but rather an impromptu recording during a public demonstration, and as such, the video is sometimes not pointed at the action (I was busy looking at what he was doing, not looking at my phone) and Michael was still a bit jet lagged from his flight over the pond, and that didn't help him as he tried to balance doing the demonstration and answering questions into a coherent presentation. Personally, I really enjoyed his demo, and think he did a great job, and the video is well worth watching, but we both wanted to acknowledge this is not a perfect video, just a spur of the moment capture of an amazing event. Wooden Antikythera Mechanism first run
Dave Goodchild
Published on Oct 20, 2015
Here is the first handle driven run of my Antikythera Mechanism. It lives!
I'm really pleased with the way it's working now - especially since I know that there are some bits that still need improving. However, it does actually work and the mechanism is, though a little noisy, remarkably free and easy to wind, despite the amount of gearing and complication inside.
My only real cheat is to (at the moment at least) attach my input drive shaft via the winding handle to gear D2 rather than B1 as per the original. This is a much better and less stressful way to power the machine at present. This may change as time goes on. The handle shaft is also in completely the wrong position at the moment and would exit right through the display dials, so it will have to move to a better place, but at the moment it's fine where it is.
The film itself is a bit shaky I'm afraid and the winding speed of the machine a bit uneven, this is due me discovering that it's very difficult to wind the handle, film, and change angle all at the same time. Next time I'll have a helper.
More soon.
Dave.

Mechanismus von Antikythera -Antikythera mechanism
Stefan Meyer
Published on Oct 27, 2015
The Antikythera mechanism is an ancient analog computer designed to predict astronomical positions and eclipses for calendrical and astrological purposes, as well as the Olympiads, the cycles of the ancient Olympic Games.
Found housed in a 340 mm × 180 mm × 90 mm wooden box, the device is a complex clockwork mechanism composed of at least 30 meshing bronze gears. Antikythera Mechanism - Replica in scale 3:1
Solidforms O.E.
Published on Jun 16, 2016
The Antikythera Mechanism was a technologically amazing analog computer, the first computer in human history. It was constructed between 200-150 B.C. and was used to calculate the exact position of the Sun, the Moon and possibly the planets in the sky. It calculated the phases of the Moon, predicted eclipses and indicated the date of the panhellenic games. It had front and back doors, with astronomical, geographical and technological inscriptions covering much of the exterior of the Mechanism.
In 1900, the corroded fragments of the Antikythera Mechanism were found accidentaly in a shipwreck, at the coast of the Antikythera island. For more than 100 years researchers were trying to unlock the secrets of the Mechanism, in order to find out the usage of this amazing ancient device.
Nowadays, a team of researchers based in Thessaloniki built the most recent and accurate replica of the Mechanism that have ever been built!
The model in this video is an exact copy of this replica but 3 times bigger. Moreover, the plates and the gears were made from plexiglass, in order to be visible the interior of the Mechanism.
This replica is exhibited in the National Observatory of Athens.

Mike Edmunds: Unlocking Aphrodite's Secrets -The Antikythera Mechanism and its Legacy
isgofficial
Published on Aug 19, 2016
Emeritus Professor of Astrophysics at Cardiff University Mike Edmunds talks about the Antikythera Mechanism. This was one of the keynote sessions at the Information Security Group (ISG) Open Day at Royal Holloway, University of London, in June 2016.
Abstract: The Antikythera Mechanism is an extraordinary device containing over thirty gear wheels, and dating from the 1st century B.C. It is an order of magnitude more complicated than any surviving mechanism from the following millennium. In this
illustrated talk, I will show the results of international research which has probed its structure and functions. The Mechanism's design is very sophisticated. Modern imaging technology and a study of its historical context in the ancient World have both played a crucial role in its decipherment. Its purpose was astronomical - including eclipse prediction, and a display of the motions of the planets. An outline of subsequent developments through medieval times, the Renaissance and the 19th Century will demonstrate its importance. The Mechanism illuminates cosmology and philosophy at the beginning of a mechanical view of the Universe, and its geared technology is a distant but recognisable precursor of mechanical calculation and the computer.

Scientists Unravel Mystery of Ancient Greek Machine | Antikythera mechanism - History

The Antikythera mechanism (/ˌæntɨkɨˈθɪərə/ ANT-i-ki-THEER-ə or /ˌæntɨˈkɪθərə/ ANT-i-KITH-ə-rə) is an ancient analog computer designed to predict astronomical positions and eclipses for calendrical and astrological purposes, as well as the Olympiads, the cycles of the ancient Olympic Games.
Found housed in a 340 mm × 180 mm × 90 mm wooden box, the device is a complex clockwork mechanism composed of at least 30 meshing bronze gears. Its remains were found as 82 separate fragments, of which only seven contain any gears or significant inscriptions.[9][10] The largest gear (clearly visible in Fragment A at right) is approximately 140 mm in diameter and originally had 223 teeth.
The artifact was recovered in 1900–1901 from the Antikythera shipwreck off the Greek island of Antikythera.[ Believed to have been designed and constructed by Greek scientists, the instrument has been dated either between 150 and 100 BCE, or, according to a more recent view, at 205 BCE

Star Clock BC: Antikythera Mechanism - Full Documentary
Documentary Addict
Published on Nov 19, 2016
Over a century ago, sponge divers recovered an extremely complex mechanical device from a shipwreck. Hidden among a rich cache of bronze and marble statues, glassware and amphorae was a mechanism the size of a shoe box. Inside the mechanism were mathematical gears and pointers.
The Ancient Greeks were known to be philosophers, poets, and mathematicians but there was nothing in the archaeological record to suggest that they were also technicians capable of creating something so complex. It has taken researchers 100 years to understand what the mechanism does.
Dubbed the Antikythera mechanism (for the location of the shipwreck from which it came), the device is considered the world's first computer, developed by the Greeks around the 1st century B.C. Scientists continue to marvel at its intricate system of gears which rival that of the most complex Swiss watch.

The exclusive mechanical timepieces by A. Lange & Söhne are crafted from precious materials with the utmost of artisanal skill and only in small editions. They are guardians of a horological culture that is handed down from generation to generation and that began in 1845, when Ferdinand A. Lange founded his watch manufactory in Glashütte, Sachsen. After the German Reunification, his great-grandson Walter Lange re-founded the manufactory that had been expropriated in 1948. In 1990, he re-founded the manufactory after its expropriation in in late 1940s. Ferdinand A. Lange’s ambition to define benchmarks with timepieces of the manufactory is still reflected in every single Lange watch.

When was the Antikythera mechanism found?
The fragments of the Mechanism were discovered in 1901 by sponge divers near the island of Antikythera. It is kept since then at the National Archaeological Museum in Athens, Greece. For more than a century, researchers were trying to understand its functions.
Where was the Antikythera mechanism found?
The Antikythera Mechanism discovery. Sometime before Easter 1900 a Greek sponge diver discovered the wreck of an ancient cargo ship off Antikythera island which is located to the north-west of Crete in the Dodecanese. Divers subsequently retrieved several bronze and marble statues and other artifacts from the site.
What are the ancient and mechanical computer?
The Antikythera Mechanism is an ancient Greek mechanical computer built in about 150 B.C.E. It was designed to calculate the position of the sun and moon as well as to calculate the dates of solar and lunar eclipses.
Antikythera Mechanism was created in 205 BC, study claims. The rusty bronze fragments of the Antikythera Mechanism, the world's oldest computer, are 100 years older than scientists previously thought.

Making gears by hand without machines - Part 1 - Kosmos
Kosmos Horology
Published on Mar 24, 2017
How did clockmakers and watchmakers arrive at the divisions in their gear wheel teeth before the invention of sophisticated tools? We can create very accurate divisions using only simple methods. In this part 1, I show how this is done, as also demonstrated at a horological exhibition last year. In part 2, I show how the teeth are actually cut and filed, by hand.
This process has been used for at least a few thousand years. I first learned of it by watching Michael Wright, of the London Science museum demonstrate this on the BBC. The method has also been published in German and English horological reference books.

what is the Antikythera mechanism? Google Doodle for Antikythera mechanism's Discovery
Rajamanickam Antonimuthu
Published on May 16, 2017
The Search Engine Google is showing this Doodle for the 115th Anniversary of the Antikythera Mechanism's Discovery.
The Antikythera mechanism is an ancient analogue computer and orrery used to predict astronomical positions and eclipses for calendrical and astrological purposes
The Antikythera Mechanism tracked planetary positions, predicted lunar and solar eclipses, and even signaled the next Olympic Games. It was probably also used for mapping and navigation. A dial on the front combines zodiacal and solar calendars, while dials on the back capture celestial cycles. Computer models based on 3-D tomography have revealed more than 30 sophisticated gears, housed in a wooden and bronze case the size of a shoebox.
All known fragments of the Antikythera mechanism are kept at the National Archaeological Museum, in Athens, along with a number of artistic reconstructions of how the mechanism may have looked.
The mechanism was initially dated around 85 BC, but recent studies suggest it may be even older . The crank-powered device was way ahead of its time -- its components are as intricate as those of some 18th-century clocks.
Today's Google Doodle illustrates how a rusty remnant can open up a skyful of knowledge and inspiration.

The "Antikythera mechanism," without doubt, one of the world’s most compelling artefacts.
Amazingly, it is still within the public domain, one of the rare gems which provides proof of a lost history here on earth.
A history filled with the rise of countless civilizations, and with them, their fruitful development in a vast array of once advanced, and now lost technologies.
The mechanism was first discovered in 1900 by a group of sponge divers within the Antikythera shipwreck, just off Point Glyphadia, near the Greek island of Antikythera.
Amongst the wreck were numerous large relics, including bronze and marble statues, jewellery, and other precious artefacts, it was clearly valuable cargo at the time of its sinking.
Subsequently transferred to the National Museum of Archaeology in Athens, the mechanism was merely a lump of corroded bronze and wood at the time, and went unnoticed for over two years.
However, on 17 May 1902, archaeologist Valerios Stais found that one of the pieces had a gear wheel embedded in it.
He initially believed that it was an astronomical clock, however, now, most scholars reluctantly perceive the device to be “prochronistic,” too complex to have been constructed during the same period as the other pieces that had been discovered, yet also of clear antiquity.
It is simply unexplainable within the rigid boundaries of academically held paradigm.
After exhaustive reconstruction efforts since, it has been confirmed to have once been an ancient analogue computer, an orrery used to predict astronomical positions, and an extremely long term, complex calendar for astrological purposes.
Just how did an ancient Greek cargo ship end up with such a complex and clearly advanced piece of equipment on board?
Was this mechanism, at the time of the Greeks, an ancient, retrieved, intact artefact?
That even during their time in history was an artefact of great antiquity, originally owned by a long lost civilisation?
Or judging by the astronomical connections, was this mechanism once, not of this world?
It would seem, amazingly, that the latter possibility now has a more compelling detail, which has only recently come to light.
Over the past few years it seems, even more fascinating secrets surrounding this once amazing mechanism, have slowly been revealed.
Mysterious inscriptions found upon the face of the object were once indecipherable, but not anymore…
Modern technology has allowed us to reveal the seemingly impossible, and has shown that these mysterious writings, actually appear to form part of an elaborate instruction manual used to unlock its true potential.
However, what is astonishing regarding these inscriptions, is the fact that they were indeed written in ancient Greek, and with many modern fields of study unable to accept the premise that ancient Greece was capable of such craftmanship, or indeed possessed such technology, you have to ask, was this mechanism a gift from the gods?

This is an improved version of an already uploaded video in youtube. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRrXD...) showing the handling of a 3d virtual model of the Antikythera mechanism. My first priority was mostly the construction of a usable and reliable interactive 3d model of the mechanism aiming to a wide range of viewers than an exact replica of the prototype. That is the reason the model was designed in a magnified scale. After the good acceptance of the first edition which is much appreciated, I decided to make some improvements in the materials and textures. If you want to be "immersed" in this extraordinary machine feel free to download the whole application from https://aegeangr-my.sharepoint.com/:u... or explore the model in a HD environment which is available at http://users.sch.gr/johndiol/antikyth...

How Aristotle understood the Earth was round by observing lunar eclipses; how Aristarchus of Samos used these results to work out the relative sizes of Earth, the Sun, and Moon, how Eratosthenes of Cyrene measured Earth's circumference, and how Hipparchus of Nicaea determined created the first catalog of stars and discovered Earth's 26,000 year axial precession, Finally, we take a look at Claudius Ptolemy's collection of works in the Almagest, and how he came up with a system of epicycles to explain planets' retrograde motion.

Archaeologists have discovered additional intriguing artifacts from the Greek shipwreck famous for carrying an "ancient computer." Discovered over a century ago off the island Antikythera, the ship, large for its time some 2,000 years ago, was carrying luxury goods, probably to Rome. The site represents what one of the team's co-leaders reports is the largest known cache of shipwreck cargo in the Mediterranean. In addition to the so-called Antikythera mechanism, a device for tracking celestial movements, the ship carried pottery items and bronze statues. This year's expedition has brought one more fragment of the latter to light, a disembodied arm, much like the "orphan limbs" that sponge divers first spotted when they discovered the wreck in 1900. Another bronze artifact just discovered is a disc decorated with the figure of a bull. The function of this piece is a mystery.

An Antikythera Mechanism
Confused Dave
Published on Nov 26, 2017
As a personal project, I've begun modelling an Antikytheran orrery. The gear train and mechanism is based on the ancient Antikythera mechanism (particularly Tony Freeth's reconstruction of planetary motions).
I'm hesitant to call it "the" antikythera mechanism, because I've taken a lot of liberties with the design, including building it with modern involute gears instead of the simple triangular-toothed gears from the original. Also, because I'd like to be able to look down into the gearing when it's finished, I decided to use a three-fold symmetrical design rather than the iconic "cruciform" shape of the original piece; these are largely aesthetic decisions, they don't affect the underlying mechanism.
Enough of it is complete to show the display for Mercury (cyan), Venus (magenta) and the Solar Anomaly output relative to the date (in brown, at the back). The needles have been calibrated to the sun - so they should show the range of positions of the planets - but not to each other, so this doesn't represent and particular epoch. As noted in the video, the zodiac/calendar overlay is based on the path of the ecliptic today, so includes Ophiucus.
(Apologies for the awful materials/lighting setup - I just wanted something quick to show my progress so far)
NOTE - there's an error in the zodiac overlay in the second part of the video; I got confused about the direction of the dates, so all the labels are one position wrong; Scorpius is the shortest constellation, not Ophiuchus as indicated here.

An Antikythera Mechanism, part 2
Confused Dave
Published on Dec 2, 2017
More work in progress on this project, now with more realistic textures. I've now completed the Superior Planet assembly, representing the motion of Mars, Saturn and Jupiter. At the end of the clip I tried to get a close-in shot of the pin-and-slider mechanism, showing the orientation of the pins starting near solar conjunction (note the red needle for mars being near the yellow needle for the sun), and then moving around to oppositiion, at which point the needle correctly shows Mars moving retrograde. In the end it didn't show up so well in the video, so I didn't bother annotating it, but I left it in anyway.
Given we're now approaching half a million vertices with a more robust shader, these renders have gotten quite hefty, so this might end up being the last video until I have something more complete. Or alternatively, I might get so fed up of modelling gears that I'm desperate to do another clip next weekend.
