2009    Honorable mention for the Elliot Skinner Book Award, for African Anthropologies: History, Theory and Practice (co-edited with David mills and                Mustafa Babiker), awarded by the Association for Africanist Anthropology, Pittsburgh, PA, December 2, 2009.2008   Calvin College Center for               Christian Scholarship and Nagel Institute for the Study of World Christianity grant to support a faculty reading group on Christianity in Africa

2008   Sociology Department Deur Award, Calvin College to support a conference on The Social Impact of  Christianity in Africa (August 13-15, 2009)

2008    CODESRIA Multinational Working Group research grant  Support for research on the role of hip hop in articulating the vision of an African                     Renaissance as part of 12 other scholars working in 8 African countries on the topic of Youth and identity in Africa.

2006    Wenner-Gren Foundation, Richard Hunt Postdoctoral Fellowship
            Support the writing of a manuscript titled “Reversed Gaze: An African encounters America through Anthropology,” during the 2007-08 academic             year.

2004    Faculty Fellowship, Center for Vocational Reflection, Augustana College.
            Supported initial work on preparing a service-learning program at Augustana College.
