Herman K. Meyer, 86, of Sparta died Friday, December 22, 2006 at the Morrow Memorial Home, Sparta. He was born on December 31, 1919 in Sparta to Carl and Christina (Johnson) Meyer. He grew up in Pleasant Valley, rural Leon and graduated from Sparta High School in 1937. He served in the U.S. Army from February 11, 1942 until October 25, 1945. He was a Tech Sergeant with the 83rd Armored Division.
He married Alvenia Mullet on July 1, 1947 by Reverend Fredericks. After marriage they farmed in Pleasant Valley until they moved to Sparta in 1979. He worked at Sparta Manufacturing until he retired in 1981. Alvenia passed away on January 22, 1992. He became a resident of the Morrow Memorial Home in September of 2005.
He is survived by his children, Mayone (Richard) Hanson of Rockland, Eileen (Robert E.) Miller of Sparta, Verlyn (Betty) Meyer of Sparta; nine grandchildren, Dan (Cindy) Engelke, Stacey (Trevor) Charlton, Laura Meyer, Jennifer Meyer, Kimberly Meyer, Sarah (Shawn) Volden, Renee Miller, Brian Hanson, Jordan Meyer; four great grandchildren, Matt Struve, Patrick Meyer, Alexa Volden, Delton McGinnis, and a neighborhood friend, Charlie Rugg.
In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Glenda; three sisters, Marie, Louise, Hazel; five brothers, Wilmer, John, LeRoy, LaVern, Glenn, and a special friend, Esther Koss.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, December 27, 2006 at 10 a.m. at the Lanham-Miller Funeral Home, Sparta. Burial with full military honors provided by V.F.W. Post 2112 will be in the Leon Cemetery, Leon.
Friends may call at the Lanham-Miller Funeral Home on Tuesday from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. and at the funeral home on Wednesday from 9 a.m. until the time of services.
