It seems that Surrey Square Park and especially the WildLife Area have always had their share of trouble.
Still...the latest episode of vandalism has been particularly galling.
Recently, last Wednesday in fact, the long anticipated works for the Cleener, Greener, Safer Award had started. Amongst the many preliminary works done that (and the previous day) there was the transplant of several saplings from the front part of the WildLife Area, thatwill be deeply reshaped, to other part of the site that will not be subject to the same landscaping.
Some of the spots chosen was the Kinglake side part of the site. It was noted that the copings (the layer of bricks used to cover the top of a wall) of the retaining wall dividing the more elevated ground level of the WLA and the lower carpark spaces in front of Barham house was becoming detached.
This has been the case for sometimes, but the level of displacement was obviously been aggravated by some recent accident, possibly the collision with a lorry or similar was the likely cause, I took the mental note to talk to the Kinglake Tenants & Resident Association about it and put some pressure on the Council Estate Management to remedy it with some urgency. I was however not too worry about something that very likely could have become troublesome in months rother than weeks.
I was wrong! Sunday coming along the I saw the copings have been deliberately prised up, broken, probably as a prelude for taking away the valuable rounded bricks, and the planting so tenderly and recently done damaged!!
It was so sad to see how anyone could be so callow to disregard any sense of decency and ruin needlessly, the effort to save a little of countryside in the middle of our grim urban estates.
Disgraceful and coward can only this antisocial behaviour be described, anyone that have any informations on the perpetrator is invited to inform us writing to our email or to contact the Community Wardens ( 0207 525 5846)!
And then
And then
the vandals seems to have taken advantage of the recent uncompleted works to cut a path from Albridge Street to the back of the WildLife Area. In my mind it only highlighted how doamging and dangerous for the site would be to have a short-cut breaking up the site.
