Effective Practices for Online Teaching & Learning

Effective Practices for Online
Teaching & Learning

Spring 2015 Institute - January 12 - 14, 2015

Are you thinking about teaching online? The three day Effective Practices for Online Teaching & Learning institute will introduce you to strategies for building an online course based on a solid understanding of California Community College distance education policies and procedures. During the institute you will discuss how to:

  • maximize student success by designing effective student-centered learning activities to address different learning styles

  • develop customized online policies for your class

  • identify the critical functions of a course management system

  • evaluate online assessment options

  • successfully apply copyright and fair use practices to digital content.

Completing the Effective Practices Institute fulfills the MSJC Readiness Criteria for teaching online. This institute is NOT about using Blackboard, although you will be working in your Bb course shells, it is about how to teach online. If you are interested in learning more about Blackboard, The Blended Learning with Blackboard institute may be of more interest to you.

During the three day intensive institute participants will receive a variety of instruction on the following topics:

Discovering the Real World of Online Teaching

This first session is about what it is to be an online instructor, what you need to do to get a class ready for online delivery and will provide participants with an overview of online teaching that will make your experience, and your students’ experiences successful and manageable.

Essential Elements of Online Course Design

This session will focus on developing the components and design (navigation, unit structure, etc.) of your online course that are essential to success and that will make the experience a smooth one for you, too! Participants will be provided samples and a list of policies and strategies that are essential for an online course.

Designing Online Lessons and Units

The focus of this session is on the details of creating a lesson within a unit of study in a course. Participants will review Web 2.0 tools and samples of learning objects and lesson planning strategies and evaluation for online teaching and learning.

Defining and Developing Interactivity

The focus of this session will be on using free and available tools to enrich your course content, such as video, audio, and animation applications.

Communication, Discussion and Sanity while Teaching Online

This session will focus on communication strategies used in online teaching that include the art of writing discussion questions, using email effectively (maintaining your sanity and saving you time), strategies for using blogs and other online tools for working with students. The group will share and gain new ideas about interacting with online students.
