Career Exploration will pair your personal interest, abilities, personality with desired education level and type of employment. Your decision on a career will impact you, your family and your friends. It is important to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of career choices

Studies have showed that, on average, completing high school and earning a college degree will raise a person’s income even after direct cost (tuition and books) and indirect cost (income that an individual could otherwise have earned during time spent in school) of getting an education are figured in.

Use the Occupational Outlook Online web site: https://www.bls.gov/ooh/ to research four of your favorite careers in your interest survey. You may also use any of the other websites listed on the next page if you think you need more/varied information.
Design a spreadsheet in Excel to compare the following:
Qualities needed - What is some human capital or skills that you need to be successful in this job? What personal strengths and weakness would this job entail?
Nature of Work – What are the general job duties, Who do you work with, Where are you working, What kind of technology or tools are you using
Working Conditions – Are you inside, outside? Do you work with harmful materials, What are you general hours? Is your job a clean or dirty job? Will you be required to move? What are some geographic requirements?
Advancement/Perks/Drawbacks - How can I advance up the hierarchy of power? What kind of challenges and benefits will this entail? What are some perks to this job? What are some drawbacks to this job?
Education and Training– What kind of education and/or training do you need to start and/or to advance in your career? Where would you go to receive this training? How much will this cost? Name at least two locations
Outlook and Earnings – What does the future hold for your career? Will there be a high demand for your career? How much will you start out making in Missouri and/or National, What is the average pay for this career Missouri and/or National?
Similar Occupations – if you have to find a new career, what are some occupations that you could use your skills/education for?
Dress Code - What is the dress code for your career? Be specific
Cost of Starting - Beside the education or training cost what are some other costs associated with starting your career? (tools, special vehicle, technology)
Personal Testimony - Why are you passionate about this job? After doing the research, are you still excited about this job?

Online/Newspaper Job Search
You are to locate at least six job advertisements, three job advertisements within your identified career areas which you chose and three you could apply for now or next summer.
Copy and paste your advertisements into Word or make a copy of a newspaper advertisement and tape it to your paper later. Try to find jobs that give a lot of information about the job--requirements, hours, pay rate, etc. Before handing in, please number the jobs you find: 1-6.
